Title: Opening a bank account
Post by: Mr. Tibbs on February 16, 2010, 20:02:49 PM
We have a bank account with AKbank which has a power of attorney with our agents.  Up until now, they have paid our bills etc on our behalf and we have kept it topped up when we are over there.  We have no problem with that at all, but would like to become more "mature" and pay our utility bills ourselves; also to be able to view it on line and hopefully transfer money into the account from U.K.

Can anyone give us any information on how to open a bank account in our own names, what papers i.d. etc we would need.  We only come over for short holiday breaks so time is of the essence.  Also does anyone know if, for instance, we went to an HSBC bank here in the U.K., they would be able to open an account for us in Turkey.

Thanks[^]

No hsbc in the UK can't open an account in turkey but if you go in to fortis bank in fethiye alper is very helpful I think you just need tax number and tapu.

Surely you already have an account, with AKbank.  Just call in and open other accounts, internet banking etc., under this umbrella account.  The POA would only apply to the one authorised account.

I think Alper can get your tax number for you, if you don't know it. That always used to be the case.

Alper - so if we opened a GBP account and a lire account with AKbank in Fethiye, would we be able to transfer money in and out on line from the UK ?

We are in a similar position to Mr Tibbs in that we have two accounts in Turkey (£ and Lire) but to credit money from the UK costs a lot of money and we can't gain online access.   At the moment a friend in Fethiye has a cash card for our UK account and takes Lire out of the cash machine to put into our Turkish Lire account so that we don't incurr ridiculous transfer charges.......surely there must be a simpler way !!

AND if we had an account in our names there, could we pay all of our utility bills by direct debit, for instance, the council tax and the road tax.  We wont be out there until June, so I am assuming that we will be hit with large penalties for late payment.:(
By the way, thankyou Banker for your emails, we hopefully will see you in June. :)

Yes now water but only with some banks. I notice today on the news that the owners of Fortis Bank have doubled their profits. They are the biggest Bank in Europe.
