Title: How many pets are you allowed to import?
Post by: janmack on September 06, 2004, 18:31:09 PM
I have been advised that you can only bring one pet per person...does anyone know if this is correct?  There are 2 of us moving to Turkey soon but we have 3 pets - does anyone know how we can overcome this problem?

Many thanks
Jan

If a third person joined us would we then be able to take the 3 pets?  Is it compulsory to have a residence visa?
Cheers

You do not need residency to bring a pet. I am not sure if it is one pet per passenger but if that is correct then a third person could bring one.

Ensure also that before you book your tickets you have confirmation from the airline that it is possible to bring pets on your chosen flight - when I did all this it wasn't easy, it epends on the amount of cargo being taken, size/height restrictions of the hold etc.

Mind you I was hoping to bring my aquarium with me and had trouble finding enough people travelling for each of my 60 guppies.

Ignore the last bit

Thanks Scunner.  I will try to find out if it one pet per passenger somehow or other.  I've spoken to Defra, they refer me to the Turkish Consulate, I've spoken to someone in the consulate, they referred me to the airline I'm travelling with, I've spoken to them and they said they didn't know!  Ever felt like you're getting nowhere fast!!

It is one pet per person and make sure all the shots and paperwork are upto date. I work for a removal and relocation company here in Turkey so I know the facts. Different airlines charge different ways some by weight some by cubic feet. best advice is to ask your vet but the one pet per person rule stands.

Thanks agazina - just to clarify that me, my husband and my brother-in-law can take one pet each on the same flight...is that correct?  The vaccinations and paperwork are in order, just waiting for the export health certificate once we have a definite date.
Cheers

If you want to see running around try clearing your shipping container of personal belongings (takes 2 days) or try reregistering your english car plates for turkish plates (10 days for a pro or in my case 4 weeks).
Turkish redtape is the most frustrating thing about anf those of you here must know what I mean but the car thing, never again, I would rather pay 500 euros for someone else to do it.

Thanks to all who have replied.  Sounds like we're in for a great time at customs...can't wait!  I'm just glad we've decided against taking our car.  The shipping company we are using will be  delivering our personal possessions to the door so, fingers crossed, that should mean no hassle.  I live in hope!!!

Thanks orangecars - we are actually using Ladyhayes.  We were a bit surprised that they did not know how many pets you could take with you but other than that they have been very helpful.

Am doing it through a pet travel company who do everything for you, my only concern is that the dog has to go on 3 differant flights, Edinburgh to London, then Istanbul then Izmir. Has anyone out there brought their dog over and how did they get on? Im just a big softy when it comes to my dog and am a wee bit worried about how she will cope hope someone out their can reassure me. Thanks all. Lorna

Hi Lorna,
I brought my dog out in July and flew Gatwick/Dalaman. I like you was a little concerned, i can assure you that they are well looked after and when i collected him at Dalaman he was fine.

Why are you flying to istanbul then another one to Izmir? I think in May you can go direct to |Izmir from manchester and other airports. I have been looking as we have bought in Kusadasi and know there are direct flights to Izmirwho hopefully take pets. ( for furture reference, hopefully ! !
Good luck

Hi Babs, I have been told by the company that we are using to transport the dog that this is the route she will have to go by, think I will have to look into this further as it would be better for her not to have to stop in Istanbul. By the way does anyone know how long it takes to go from Hisaronu to Izmir as we will have to go and collect poor Bonnie once she lands.Cheers Lorna

See your other post!

I think you would be better considering going via Bristol to Dalaman.

Hisaronu to Izmir is 4 / 6 hours depending on whether you drive like a Turk or a Brit!

Hi Everyone, Have just sold my UK home and am looking at moving to Turkey. Bit scared about the earthquakes etc though!
Also I have three dogs at present and how do you choose just one?
Don't know if I can do this!
Would you reccomend Turkey if you are retiring as I shall be doing?

Is it still value for money some of the prices seem quite high then others are extremely low. Others competetive with say N. Cyprus!
Would I be lonely ?
Is there lots to do also I cannot speak any Turkish!
Please help me in any way possible.

Cavalier & Jan ,

If your moving out to Turkey permanently you can only bring 1 dog AT A TIME. If you really can't choose between them, make 3 trips or get a friend or 2 to fly out with you!

Cavalier and Jan, regarding your query about being lonely; it is impossible to be lonely in Turkey as the Turkish people are so friendly and not being able to speak Turkish is not too serious but the longer you spend there  the sooner you will be able to pick up the language. I'm sure you will enjoy yourselves when you get out there. Prices are still reasonable when you know where to go.

Helen, i have sent you a pm on the subject, but for anybody else who may need to transport there pets, the company i used was "Ladyhaye International Pet Travel Agents" they are based very near to gatwick airport, there web site is www.ladyhaye.co.uk. For anyone in the north of the UK i would suggest Animals by Air who are based near to Manchester Airport.

[Hello we hope to move out this year and as we are a bit too young to get a pension yet we are having to stretch out the money we are getting from the sale of our house.  You say that you can still get reasonably priced areas any ideas please

Can anyone tell me roughly how much it costs all in to bring a dog to Turkey?  This would need to include a pet passport and all the vacinations as well as flight and other costs i've not considered.  Thanks in advance.

Between £1,000 and £1,500 per dog depending on how much your vet charges for his/her work.

Hi,
Last May we brought our African grey through Dalaman airport and yes it came through on the conveyer belt. They put the dog and cat on too but (Alfie's) dog cage was to big and got stuck  so they had to take him off. They were all fine and have settled well in Altinkum

I think it is normal for them to come off this way. We saw a dog on the conveyor belt last time and that is where we expect to see our two come out as well when we take them.  The dog was very happy and was met with a big aaahhhhhhh! and lots of smiling faces as he chugged through. His owner was there waiting to pick him up.

oh my god i can't belive it. lol
i hope when i bring my two parrots through there that my african grey keeps his beak shut, as he has a very bad language problem.lol The W  word happens to be his favourite. lol
he was taught by previous owners and can't get him to stop it.
as for the cockatoo he will just say hello and i want a cuddle.lol
so if any of you are at dalaman in the next couple of months and hear the word w...... its not me lol. its charlie.
