For me, Jonny Wilkinson (despite Highlander's assertions that "team" sportsmen shouldn't be in there).

There is nothing about that man that does not command respect as the best we (Britain) have ever had.

New Zealand's Dan Carter pushes him close in terms of ability - maybe even better but as a New Zealander he's not qualified.

Jonny Wilkinson is dedicated, wholly professional, successful and a role model for all.

Andy Murray may well be (Hoy et al aside) Scotland's "greatest" sportsman.

Never Britain's greatest - "ABE" - (anyone but England) - being a great sportsman goes beyond being successful in your chosen sport.

It's Britain's greatest sportsman you're looking for - not the most successful in his chosen field.

If that was the case you need look no further than Phil Taylor.

In the days of my youthood my hero was Mike Hailwood, a champion on and off race circuits. What a guy.

Indeed Lotty, I know a guy that owns 2 MVs that were raced by Mike & Ago plus a couple of

Mikes earlier bikes. I got to know some of these guys in the paddocks and I was talking to

Mike in his Birmingham showroom a couple of days before he and his young daughter died

in a car smash. He was admired by every rider and could win on any sort of bike. A true

champion and a lovely, funny man

This little island of ours has produced some fantastic and heroic sportspeople and we should

be justifiably proud of their achievements, and grateful for their sacrifices and dedication.

Well said that man !.

If I were to consider a member of a team there would be only one winner - Kenny Dalglish not just for his exploits on the field but for what he did at the time and since the Hillsborough disaster.

A thoroughly decent human being.
