Title: shipping carpet to uk
Post by: peat on September 12, 2018, 07:52:37 AM
I am going to Calis in October and I was thinking that with the exchange rate what it is, this year may be a good year to buy a carpet/rug.. Can anyone advise on the best way to arrange to get such an item shipped back to UK and will there be any duty to pay on receipt.

Thanks!

The PTT do a reasonable cargo service the UK. Duty will depend on the declared value.

(IKEA stock some very good quality Turkish and Persian rugs in their UK stores)

We bought one years ago, it was folded up into a small canvas bag, and we took it as hand luggage

Hi,we bought a rug last year approx 6x4 ,the shop will roll it up and wrap it for you.we brought it home as hold baggage,so same price as a suitcase  providing  it falls within the weight limits.

Whatever you do, do not allow the shop to arrange the shipping.

While the majority of rug shops in Fethiye are trustworthy and send you the rug you choose, it is not unknown for a different (i.e. cheaper or poor quality) rug to be substituted in the knowledge that you will be a couple of thousand kilometres away when it arrives.

Caveat emptor!

And more often than not they'll want to use a private cargo company claiming the PTT shipping can't be trusted.

That will cost a small fortune and you will almost definitely have to pay import duties.

The PTT I have found to be 100% reliable over many years having sent hundreds if not thousands of parcels, as long as it's recorded or signed for. And fast! Under 2 kilos about 7 days and over 2 kilos about ten days ish.

All parcel cargo prices are now based on weight and distance to country it's going to. Under two kilos it used to be just weight only, which worked out very favourably when sending to Australia or the States but they stopped that a few years ago unfortunately.
