Solar eclipse.

On Friday the 20th there's a partial (40%) eclipse of the sun at about 11.51. The forecast for Fethiye is good for Friday.

We saw the last total eclipse of the sun in Turkey in March 2006, we stayed on Kas harbour and there was almost 3 minutes of totality. Here's a couple of pics we took at the time, it was about 2pm or there about.

Many thanks for the info DonM and of course your amazing photo's. I was unaware of this, so hopefully it will be a clear blue sky tomorrow!

Whilst most people understand the mechanics of a solar eclipse, few realise that this is likely to be a unique event IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE! No other known planet has this phenomenon. The moon has to be the exact size and the exact distance from the earth for this to happen. Consider yourself privileged!

Mind you, the ancient Greeks believed a solar eclipse was a sign that the gods were angry, and that it heralded disasters and destruction.

So watch this space (ha ha)

Here in the west of Ireland it was cloudy but not thick clouds and we saw the moon against the sun. The cows and sheep lay down and the birds were not singing as the air grew colder, eery experience but quite exciting.

We timed a fire evacuation drill with the eclipse so all could see it.
I thought it nothing special to be fair. even with clear skies.

We didn't see a thing in not sunny Manchester. But found it exciting to listen to the descriptions on 5 live..
