After paying through the nose for making and receiving voice calls and texts to/from Turkey I wondered if it was worth investing in a Turkish mobile. Any views? If a good idea, how do I go about it?
-
Hi all!i was just about to ask the same question,i am not really a mobile phone person but know they are a necess,,,,(can't spell it) can someone tell me in "janet and john fashion" whats the easiest way while in turkey. Thanx,Bee

You can take your english mobile over and just change the sim card ( provided the phone is open to all networks )This subject has had a great deal of coverage in the past do a search and i am sure you will find the information you are looking for.

Pop into a mobile phone shop, Turkcell or any other, there's a few on the oneway system, choose a cheap one ,buy a sim card & after about 24 hours you can use it.You will need to take your passport along.Ask them in the shop to change the language into english- it helps! Also ask them to top it up & watch them the first time.

You are lucky then Ron. If it's not registered it will be locked eventually.

I have used a British mobile 'phone on holiday in Calis.I found that it was expensive to make a call to UK and that the recipient had to pay too.I use the public telephone kiosks, but take my (handy),with me in case of an emergency re elderly relatives.Much cheaper buying a telephone card there.
-
Yes, the turkish government are still blocking english phones this year and faster than they were last year, better to buy a cheap turkish one,
-
today i have just bought a new nokia phone and 250 worth of credits all for 110 ytl thats what i call a bargain, there was a offer on how lucky was that
-
Puma,
Where did you get your bargain phone from? Would like to buy one when out next week.
-
try the turkcell shops in fethiye i got a nokia for £40 plus £5 worth of calls took about 10 mins from walking in to walking out with all the details done and phone in english
-
Puma
Have you posted that correctly? £90 of calltime on a free phone for around £40?
If so - where did you get this?
-
Should that have been 250 Konturs ( about 30YTL )[?] :)

If you buy a Sim Card in Turkey as we do all the time you need to use it. If you are away for 6 months or more it 'dies' and you need to buy a new one. Also, you need to use an unlocked mobile phone to use this (a bit obvious I know). Unlocked mobiles will also not work after 6 months so you need to change phones with the Sim card every 6 months. We have three kids so this is never a problem. The calls are much cheaper (last Summer £20 top up lasted nearly 6 weeks and there were a lot of calls to the UK over this period as a member of family had to go to hospital). Be careful where you buy the Top Up cards as in some of the more touristy areas the local shopkeepers have a habit of adding on a few lira on top.

Bought my Turkish mobile last year in Fethiye £40 with 1000 kontours, the shop I used is opposite the Main Mosque just after you come through the lights after the footbridge on the right.
-
hi friar sounds like the shop i got a similar deal last year same price for phone
-
does anyone know if this £40 for phone and 1000 kontours deal is still on?
-
Havn't seen that deal for some time now - not that you mised much, the 1000 kontors were for one month only and only to one turkish mobile number.
-
Well said, Phil, I bought the same deal last year, but they didnt tell me the free calls were for one number.
