Post by: Ian on January 27, 2012, 09:42:55 AM
]Have been told you can just subscribe to broadband now - searched on here but can't find anything. Has anybody got this and if so can you tell me how much and where from? Also do you get wireless router so you can use more than one device at once?

As far as i know you can just buy a dongle to connect to your lappy. As regards wireless routers you would have to buy seperately and go from there.

Special offer on at PTT TURK TELECOM at the mo: 39tl a month for 8mb (unlimited download) broadband inc. phone line, why not go for this & just not use the phone? Only catch is you have to sign a 2 year agreement.

Edit: Originally said PTT but actually meant Turk Telecom, apologies.

We have broadband with no landline - unlimited YTL 57 ( I think) per month with Turk Telecom. Works fine.

Funny thing though we went in the other day to get costs for adding on a landline and the man I spoke to told me you couldn't have ADSL without a landline!!! I had to almost convince him that we did already!

Thanks for replies - Mark 1 - spoke with Gary and may go for that option BUT I still have a problem with no Internet and the package is really reduced now to basically a few channels - ITV & Ch 4 with the plus 1's on both and some radio stations.

So thinking that Internet and UK TV might be a better option and solves my Internet problem as I am about to start using a dongle I brought over - tested it yesterday - works fine but will cost me 39 TL a month.

Mark 2 - by PTT do you mean the main post office in town?
And would 8mb be ok for watching tv?
And finally finally - I am using a 160gb Acer netbook over here as it is easy to carry on my scooter - 1 mb RAM - should that work with UKTV and is it easy to get the right cable to throw picture to my tv screen?

Thanks again to all - this forum really is great for this sort of information

Ian  :)

Hi Ian
I have the dongle but beware, try to watch anything and your 4 gig will only last a few days. You can then end up paying out a couple of hundred per month.

Hot lips, could you let us know some details of the package you have.

Thanks

Jackstee - agreed - the 39 TL deal seems a no brainer to me and then buy a wireless router to make life easier and subscribe to UKTV and buy a cable?

Hi Jackstee,

We simply went into the TurkTelecom office (yellow building) near Kipa - (let me know if you need any further directions)and asked for their unlimited package for broadband only.

You can buy their modem (zyxel) or you can use your own. They came to next day to activate (we ended up waiting 5 weeks for the internet actually but that was because they had to dig up the road to replace a cable) Turk Telecom take the ADSL up to your house and then you need an electrician to install the last bit.

We access BBC I player and ITV player via UKTV access without any hitches. We also download a lot of the TV that we watch and use the internet a lot so this was the best option for us. We download all BBC programmes to i player to avoid buffering, but can't do that with ITV.  Generally with ITV we don't have any buffering except occasionally at very peak times and the internet usage is high.

Their unlimited package is 57 lira PCM. Let me know if you need anymore info

Just a query; We stayed last year for 2 months, I needed Internet at home, they had an offer of free internet for 3 months then cancel and pay nothing or after 57 or 59TL per month for internet only, I plugged a phone into the socket and it was connected, have you tried this with your connection?
When we were living in there I paid approx 49 or 59TL for phone and broadband. 57TL for broadband only is not a saving, this appears that you will have a phone line attach too.

Turk telecom has a few offer on their website now.

If I do sign up with TT do I just go to their building near Kipa with my blue book and do I buy the wireless router and handset off them or is it like the old days of BT where you are better going to a retailer to buy them?

Oh and if we move can we take it with us for a fee or have we broken the contract?

Yes go into the building near Kipa. You need your residency and passport with you. We bought TT's modem, but they do seem to have some good options in say Bimek in Fethiye with 2 aerials.

On any of these broadband offers is there the option to downgrade to line rental only for long periods you are not in Turkey? Thanks

The modem will be your property if you buy it so you are free to do what you wish with it. No need to go for an all singing/dancing one Ian, something around 80/100tl will do fine if you only intend to use 1 or 2 laptops in the same home. Kipa had some recently at 65tl, might be best to nip in there & see if there are any left.

I don't know but if I get in there on Monday and get a decent English speaking assistant I will ask for you.

Normally if you sign a 2 year contract at the Turk Telecom you get the modem free.

I have been using my broadband there (TTNet) to watch IPlayer and ITVPlayer (by using a UK IP address) but our broadband bills have trebled - even though we are on an unlimited package, so Im assuming there is a charge for using a UK IP address or there is a download limit (so therefore not unlimited!)

Just read this on another forum - anyone else had any problems with unlimited bring limited ????

Ok - been in now so to share my experience:

As usual get a number as you go in (they are closed for lunch which I think is 12.30pm until 1.30pm)

The lady on the far right is very nice and welcomed me with: "Good afternoon sir and madam how can I help you" with a beaming smile  :)

When I explained I wanted the 24 months at 39.99 she pointed out that it was 39.99 for 12 months and "normal" for the next 12 (59.99)

I decided at that point I was going to have to have a think about this but did ask as promised for Saoirse "can you take a break and not pay as I expect not to be in Turkey all year" - she said "if you are on a normal deal you can cancel for 3 months each year and then reactivate on your return but only 3 months each year.

I am now considering my options and I don't think she ever met anyone who queued for half and hour and said - "uumm let me think about it"

Ian

Ps I am thinking about it as we really don't know how many months we will be here in 2013 - probably 5 but not sure - we also have a 3g kindle that allows me to check my e-mails reasonably quickly for "free" and 2 Internet cafes within 5 minutes so I am thinking of going the cheap route - no change there then  ;)
