I got a sim out there earlier this year and I don't have residency. It wasn't a little sim though but I doubt they are any different.

I bought a new phone + sim 2 weeks ago, they didn't ask for my residency book, just a passport & in the course of the conversation, the lady mentioned that you could get up to 4 phones + sim cards each month on a passport.

Surely it's a land line that Quackers has in mind??

If they only have normal sized sim cards you can cut it down to make it into a micro sim.
There is plenty of videos on you tube showing how to do this with scissors.
You need to register your uk phone though otherwise it could be blocked that is a pain and costs money I belive.

Yes my phone worked fine in previous years but this year didn't work at all (with the new Turkish sim) - so I assume it was blocked since last year. I borrowed a Turkish phone from a friend and the sim worked fine. I had my passport but I do not recall being asked for it. Certainly I wasn't asked for my residency book which expired quite a while ago  :)

Turkcell do iphone/ipad Prepay packages and this suggests that mini-sim cards are available.
Turkcell shops may be worth a try.

Is your S3 unlocked to any network?

No: Not much point in doing anything with it in Turkey except using wi-fi which most bars have.

Yes: You can get a micro sim from Turkcell, Avea or Vodafone. All will do a package for a month to include texts & calls back to the UK, best you ask in all 3 to get the package that suits you.

No need for residency, just show your passport.

BUT

You may find that your phone gets locked, either when you are in Turkey or when you get home (as happened to my S3). If so simply go & get it unlocked again.

My advice would be to buy a cheap phone for 50tl then buy the right package of texts/calls you need & use your S3 for the internet via wi-fi.

Personal recommendation is to go & see Baris in the main Avea shop (along from the Fethiye market on the same side of the road towards the PTT), speaks very good English & extremely helpful, my sim was 49tl for the month.
