Has anyone got any experience with the Turkcell VINN wifi gadget? If so, can you give me some feedback - good / not good etc? Thank you

I have just bought one of these to try with my Turkcell dongle. Don't know if it will work until the end of May.

There is loads of info re this Mifi, I posted this previously and the link is still good for info on CBF
I use MiFI dongle and it can connect upto 5. now back in the UK I can use it travelling on 3Network £20 for 3 months. no USB ports just a small gadget that fits in to your palm, charges via mains or usb

Bought one in January after reading Loz,s post, a great piece of kit.
-
I got one last year on the advice of Loz and have been very happy with mine :)
-
Excuse my ignorance but would I use one of them in place of my existing dongle and just put my SIM in it?
-
Hi Margie this is a wireless device and uses a mobile sim card. You connect it wirelessly to the device you want to use, laptop, tablet etc and off you go. It gets the data from the local mobile network and I have found it work really well away from our place.
I am sure that you will need to get a new sim card and top up the amount of data you want to add in bundles 2 4, 10GB or other amounts.
Hope this helps.
-
Thanks Teetee. I believe they are very fast as opposed to the old dongle which can be painfully slow. As I purchased the Sim and Dongle in Turkey, I wondered if it would be possible to transfer the Sim to the Vinn wifi.
-
Hi Margie it may well be ok but I would check in the Turkcell shop on the bend on the one way street just past Pastpatur they are very helpful and you could be lucky and be able to use the sim you have.
-
Margie, the sim you currently used is a Data sim? Turkcell? if so then just buy the device and it will work, take to the shop (round the bend) and tell the manageress in there what you want, I think she is now well versed with the strange request of foreigners.
-
I know the shop (Dogus Electrics). The Sim I have was purchased from a Turkcell shop along with my Dongle and I just top it up as and when necessary with 3 or 10 gb.
I remember your earlier posts Loz and that you were impressed by the speed of the device. Whilst the Dongle gets me online, it can be dreadfully slow and sometimes drives me mad.
Thanks both for your input, will give it a whirl.
-
I bought a mifi device today from the Turksell shop on the one way system all seems to be working well at the moment it cost 225tl for device SIM card and 4gb data
-
Got mine too and am well impressed with the speed. Didn't need a new Sim just topped up, went home and set it up.
My intention is to get a UK Sim for use when in the UK. Currently using Sky Broadband which is free but only for 2GB per month. This will enable me to switch to the Vinn when I am reaching my limit. I know I could upgrade to limitless but as we spend around eight months in Turkey it seems daft to be paying any more than we do for something else that we don't use for most of the year.
Very grateful for your posts Loz, you have given me a solution to our UK problem and also to increasing the speed whilst in Turkey. :)
-
Remember, for the UK go to 3Store for a data sim to use with your MiFi, I tried o2 and it did not work, maybe another shop, Orange T,mobile but 3store is definite.
-
Great Loz, 3Store it will be. :)
-
Very interesting posts so thanks everyone and especially Loz. My husband uses a VINN dongle for his laptop and buys the 4gb data bundle for a month every time we come to Turkey. However, due to a serious family illness, we missed our Autumn visit last year and we suspect that the dongle SIM plus our Turkcell SIMS are now blocked as they haven't been used or topped up since last May (2013)! Therefore, this MIFI sounds very interesting if we are going to have to spend out anyway. The VINN can be very slow and this MIFI seems to allow data to be shared by one laptop and an ipad? What is the name of the helpful woman in the phone shop you all recommend please? We arrive in Calis next Tuesday evening for a month so this data sharing will be very useful! Can she also help with our phones - we will use the same registered ones but the SIMS will be blocked? Any advice please. Thank you.
-
I can't remember the young ladies name even though we have been going to her since 2003. Your phones will probably be blocked so just new Sim Cards and the MiFi, I call it my pocket Hero, I think you can run upto 5 devices although the more you use the more Gb Data you use and it could slow down, I honestly don't know I have only run one device off mine.
Have a great time.
-
I don't know her name but if you have a mental picture of Thelma from Scooby Doo then that's her to a T. ;D
-
you can buy the myfi unlocked so it will work with any provider i have bought a few of these from the uk these have external aerials to increase the range and speed well pleased with them i bought mine from the uk on ebay and also bought a turkcell one last year a very good buy
-
I had a couple of hiccups at first - it would not work, contacted Turkcell, and the shop had forgotten to register it. That evening it still would not work, went to the shop and there was actually a problem with the sim card they gave me! Finally, 3 days after buying, I was up and running - and I can honestly say I am really happy with it. It is neat to have around and it is very fast. Wish I had heard of these things before :)

So Gary - forgive me if I am being "a bit thick" but could I buy one unlocked in the UK when we go home and use it in the UK and then in Turkey just put my Turkcell VINN dongle sim into the mifi - top up as usual - 79tl for 3 months and it would work in Turkey or does the device still have to be registered?
-
Ian you need to buy and register in Turkey or it will be cut off. If you get an unlocked one you can use in UK.
-
Ian, I have posted this before, buy the Turkcel MiFi in Turkey, use it top up not a problem, then I can confirm that it does not need unlocking in the UK for 3Store network. I took it to a few shops looking to have it unlocked and they were not able to do it, but 3 store works not a problem. with 3 store you can register and pay online for Gb Data.
Buy one from the UK and take it to Turkey and it will eventually be blocked if not registered. If you want to go that route and buy in the UK will the MiFi work with a Turkish Data Sim?
-
It's because I am a cheapskate - I currently still use Connectify software (problem free) on my netbook with my Turkcell dongle - one off lifetime fee of about £15 (2 years ago) and it allows me to connect up to 5 devices using my netbook as the router. Quite happy with the speed as well all around the apartment on 2 floors - but I thought it might be useful to see if the mifi device gave me any advantages?
I can buy one for £25 in the UK - and that was worth a "punt" but at double that in Turkey it is too dear for a punt when I can currently connect 5 devices at home and can connect at most places we visit to eat on our tablets so I will leave it until I can buy it for £25 in Turkey - and then I will take a punt :)
-
It's because I am a cheapskate
It slipped my mind for a moment ;)

You could try one of these Ian, it's the cheapskate version if it works. I to use connectify but I have just got a tablet so dont want to take the laptop away with me. hence buying this.
-
I have no great idea of the details of what you are discussing but I did see this, should it help:

£76 - OMG - we don't all work in the oil industry you know :-)

£11 - now that's worth having even if its just to have a cheap gadget to play with - and it might work - but still not sure it has advantages over Connectify???
-
The advantages over connectify (if it works) are that it will sit there and act as a wifi signal so you can connect to it with other devices without the need to have your laptop on. With connectify you need your laptop on to have it operate as a hotspot.
-
Ah - got it - thanks - that does make sense as we often want to use the tablets but have to fire up the netbook. Will it use my GB allowance though if it is on continuously and not being used as I have noticed when I leave the dongle on - the annoying scrolling text etc do use some but not sure how much.
Plus when I fire up VINN to connect - I have to use a password - so I suspect I will have to get around that???
Either way at £11 as I said - it is now worth a punt next time we are in the UK I will pick one up and report back :)
-
Thank you so much for all the info of this. Just bought one its great and so quick!! Can you help with couple of questions pls (instructions in Turkish, mine not up to it!!). What does it mean if the battery icon is flashing green all the time? Also is there any way I can check how much data Gb I have left.
Excellent piece of kit and lady in shop very helpful.
-
The new ones are in colour, mine is old and in black and white, the battery flashing is either needing charge or charged, when charging it is same as a phone the battery bar goes up and down.
to access the info you need re the data used etc. In your browser window type 192.168.1.1 (whilst your mifi is switched on) this will take you to the login screen type admin and password admin choose English.
This is the YouTube video instructions, the best one that I could find, it is for 3store but exactly the same as Tukrcell (Get past openingoif the box, that bit is for Highlander ;) ) the screen maybe a little different but I am sure you will be able to geet the gist of it.

Thank you Loz, very much appreciate your info and the Utube video is very helpful too. So many nice people on this forum. Thanks again.
-
Thank you so much for all this advice. We went into Fethiye this morning and bought our VINN (250 TL), SIM card (35tl) and 4GB data for one month (39 tl). We've been catching up with friends here and at home and listening to radio 4 and radio Cambridgeshire! Just acouple of questions if you can help please - how do we keep a check on our data usage and battery charge? Should we keep it plugged into the charger whilst in use? Isn't modern technology fab!
:D
-
I have one and leave it plugged into the charger when in the apartment. Unplug and chuck it in the wife's handbag when we go out. You only use data when you use an app on your tablet or phone etc. that uses data. Simple as that. It's a great, convenient bIt of kit. The only downside is that we keep getting calls from our 'adult' daughters in the UK on FaceTime asking where their clean clothes are

Ian save your 11 quid i brought one over and it didn't work.
I went to theTurkcell shop by the otogar and bought the mifi for 125tl. (1st guy told me 125 then a lady in shop got involved and told me 150tl. I looked at the first guy and said he told me 125 she said ok no problem). Maybe i wqs just lucky at 125 but it is so easy to use. It was a pain having to get my laptop switched on. To run spotify so the kids could connect to it. I just leave this on all the time. Great recommendation by Loz.
-
Many, many thanks for the heads up - I had actually sent a link to ebay to one of my children to say "this is what I want for Fathers Day" - all my 4 children get an e-mail from me with plenty of notice before Birthdays/Xmas/Father's Day and occasionally I let 2 of them "club together" which makes it more exciting for them - but a corrective email has now been dispatched - thanks again :-)
-
Well at 125 lira I decided you can't all be wrong so I trundled off to the Otogar and bought one - put my existing SIM in and had it working and changed "key" to something easier to remember quite easily after the advice from Loz on logging in via 192.168.1.1
So quite happy so far and waiting to see if leaving it on during the evening so we can check CBF / Others is going to use data by just being "on"?
If it doesn't then it is much easier than powering up the netbook or leaving it on and I think my netbook will last a year or two longer if it is not continually being "booted up"
Many thanks Bewva & particularly :-)
-
Hi I have bought one of these very good but how do I check my data usage thou do I need to do it with laptop which I never brought with me or is there another way please
-

This post from Loz tells you how to check your usage.
-
Ian.was that correct 125tl and if so where did you get it?.Thanks
-
The bigger of the Turkcell shops by the Otogar I bought mine for 125TL. I got him to get it working for me also, ie put in the sim and get my phone logged on to it.
-

Spot 0n - the shop with th blue and yellow signage as they are owned by Turkcell and are not an agent (who will charge you more - my local shop asked for 175 lira).
Also remember we/I had a dongle with a sim that had 5gb left on it so I did not have to pay for a sim or data and it worked straight away.
The usage is a pain for me - even going into the control page you can only set what you have on a monthly basis (from a set date like a standing order) which is not easy for a 3 month data deal that I use and it counts down and tells you what you have used and even then not as well as the dongle did BUT most annoyingly I cannot see that in my tablet (on the control page) so have to set up the netbook to check it.
The "wifi zone" is the same as my connectify software i.e will connect on the same level but if I go upstairs and I don't take it with me the signal drops off so don't believe "all over the site and to the bar down the road!" on the plus side it is easier to have this plugged in all day and not have to fire up the netbook to connect - it is slightly quicker then the dongle and it is portable - so overall worth it :-)
-
has anyone tried playing online games with this? I play world of warcraft quiet a lot but pay 75 lira a month for broadband router and phone. don't need the phone but turkcell said I had to have it for the router (cant see why as 2 separate phone numbers). If this does work for game it would be worth me cancelling what I have and invest in this instead, but it would depend on the speed
-
Went into the Turkcell shop mentioned yesterday (dogus) and they told me I could not have one as I could not have a contract because I wasn't a Turk. Ask about top up but she said that wasn't possible either. Don't know if they have changed the rules.
-
We got one a couple of days ago at the turkcell shop on the one way road coming from the finans bank area,it's next door to the Vodafone shop, prices were, VINN 200tl, SIM card for which you need your passport 39tl and4gb top up 39 to, all in 278 to, great piece of kit we have 3 phones and two tablets hooked up to it, normal price for a 1 gob top up is 29 to, the more you top up the cheaper it is, well pleased with it and you can take it anywhere you go.
-
Worth it's weight in gold, would not be without it.
-
went in today to the one on the one way bit in Fethiye just up from Mulberry on opposite side. was told it was 350tl but they were only selling to Turkish as did not have a big supply unless I order one and she will call when it becomes available?
-
Well guess you won't be going back there. Take your business somewhere else.
-

I refer to my post in May...I cant understand why people are getting quoted stupid prices for these things or was I just lucky, I'm not normally.
-
Tried to buy one from Turkcell yesterday and told that me unless you are Turkish and sign up for a min 1 year contract you can not buy one. When they first came out they were on a promo and anyone could buy them but not now. :o
-
Did you try the shop on the one way system coming from the mulberry tree, it is the turkcell shop next door to vodaphone, got one no problem there last week.
-
topped mine up at this shop on Thursday - again no problem
-
yes i was told 350 ytl at the one opposite mulberry tree . that was for wifi and sim but no credit . wonder if its cheaper if i ask a turkish friend to get me one ? thanks
-
Managed to get one yesterday at the big turkcell shop near the main post office.360tl included 10gb have to top up within every 3 months or it is cancelled.Min 1 year contract.Strange how just the other day at another Turkcell shop it was not poss to get one. ???
-
We are hoping to get one later this week. What is the deal regarding a 1 year contract, do you have to keep it toppped up for a year?
-
You dont need a 1 year contracy it is a pay as you go and needs to be used witnin 3 months, if not the sim card will cancel, i am going to leave mine with a turkish friend along with my phone and he will top up also. 1 GB is 29 tl, 4 gb is 39 tl.
-
Why are they charging so much .when they are on turkcell website for 125 ytl .
-
Dycedon - did you know you can top up a turkcell broadband payg online from a garanti account, just need telephone number and online banking?
-
I have one and I leave mine for 6 months without credit. When I arrive in April I just go to the phone shop on Yerguzlar Caddesi in Calis and hand over 79tl for 10gb of credit. Job done.
-
I do the same as King Frat, only I don't top up with so much I normally only put 1 weeks worth on. 13TL
-
Thanks for that Simon but we are with Finans, also that is good to know that you dont need to leave it with anyone and just top up when we arrive.
-
I top my Turkish mobile up on line (Teb Bank) but have never tried to top up the dongle as they are "set": package prices and didn't think you could whereas with the payg phone you can add any amount above a minimum level - has anyone done it with Teb?
-
Got one Thursday. Larger of the two Turkcell shops on the entrance to the Otogar. Total with 4g of usage 225 tl. He set it all up for me too.
-
Hi everyone
Can anyone help, i have a notebook running windows 7 with a usb port. I use a turkish dongle and it works fine but my partner who has the new Surface running windows 8 with a usb port cannot get it to work says its not compatable. Thanks in advance
-
What does it say exactly regarding not being compatible? Windows tablets seem to have problems running anything USB other than a pen drive. First thing I'd try is, if you have a powered (plugged in to mains) USB hub, connect that to the tablet and put the dongle into that. That resolved my problem which was a USB external DVD drive - direct into tablet no go at all, via USB hub loaded driver etc and worked great.
-
Can I use turkcell Vinn with my ipad 2
-
Yes it connects via the wifi
-
Have just purchased a VINN. Can anyone tell me how I can check to see how much gigabite is left please, in the simplest of terms as certainly I have very little knowledge of internet etc. Thank you for all your help.
-
not sure about that one, you may have to connect to computer, i will look forward to the answer on this one.
-
take a look at this youtube tutorial, the part that you would need is approx 3.12mins into the video, the first part is taking it out of the box!!!
your screen once logged on may look a little different to the youtube ,
you may get the option to use the screen presented or classic, with the Turkcell vinn I prefer Classic, you can see right away how much is left or clear the system to start again and see what you are using on the MiFi itself.

Windows tablets seem to have problems running anything USB other than a pen drive.
Yeah, especially with MIFI dongles. Basically its a driver issue - Windows RT does not allow users to install desktop software which means you can't install either the driver or the proprietary apps needed to run the dongles.
Some of the newer dongles may work, you need to check if they use the NDIS 6.3 interface. Windows RT has the drivers for this built in.
JF
-
Maybe, but mine isn't Windows RT :)
-
Fairly sure Windows 8 & 8.1 are the same (as in need NDIS 6.3 devices) - but truth be told, I haven't had a play with either so cant be 100%.
JF
-
If on turkcell log on to device and text "kalan" to 2222 and expiry date and remaining allowance is text back free.

I think you lost me when you started to type! why do you need to download the software?

Third party manufactured devices (printers, modems etc) often need additional files (drivers) to work. For many of them, the additional files are installed ready to go within windows - you've probably seen the notification when you plug a device into a Windows computer "installing device drivers". These are often generic drivers which work across a variety of devices by different manufacturers.
Unfortunately, some device manufacturers don't submit their device drivers to Microsoft (as it cost money!) and provide the additional files/drivers on a CD, to be loaded before or during the installation of the device.
Hope that makes sense!

Are the devices readily available at the moment
Arrive tomorrow and planning t get one to keep the teenagers happy
Thank you

but does it wash the dishes!
just buy the ruddy thing, it works no matter what device you use, why plug it in? yet do not try it out in the washing machine, it does not like it.
-
Returning to the initial problem, I am sure it is the limited power offered by windows tablets through their USB ports that causes the VINN not to show, not a driver issue. Using a powered USB hub should solve it :)
-
MiFi is not usb, probably the best way to go to do away with this problem. USB VNN is unreliable and slow. threw it in the bin years ago. and apparently it is now 170TL and can connect upto 10 devices remotely.
-
That may be true, but I was answering a question about a Turkcell USB dongle ;)
-
I can now see the confusion, some bright spark has merged USB dongles with non USB and wirelless Mifi wifi, so we are all now chatting at cross purposes.
-
Logged on to dashboard - sent text to 2222 to check my balance and received this - sadly none the wiser - think it might be easier to put sim in my old dongle to check :-(
3 Aylik 10GB Internet paketinden kalan 2320,02MB.25.11.2014 tarihine kadar kullanabilirsiniz. 3 AY GECERLI 5 MB paketinden kalan 50,1MB.02.12.2014 tarihine kadar kullanabilirsiniz. Paket bitiminde kullaniminiz, mevcut tarifenizden ucretlendirilir.
-
Ian, it means you can use the remaining 2.320 gb until 25/11/2014. Would that be the end of the 3 months? :)
Like you I used to put the Sim back in my old Dongle to get my balance but it eventually got damaged.
-
Ahhhh - thank you Marggie - the way they wrote the 2320,02MB fooled me but I will know in future and it looks like we can watch I'm a Celebrity tonight as a treat :-)
-
I cannot get my head around watching I am a Celebrity as a treat. The biggest load of crxp I have ever seen! But each to his own! ;D :) ;)
-
Its a case of watch something or give Turkcell 2GB back for nothing :-)
-
In that case, watch and enjoy. ;D ;D ;D
-
And the result of Strictly Ian :) This year the contestants are very strong, maybe one a bit weak but the standard is high.
-
Lol - the pleasures of "living the dream" :-)
-
Its a case of watch something or give Turkcell 2GB back for nothing :-)
Tough call Ian. I'm a cleb or give 2GB back. ;)
-
Lol - might just watch the News instead :-)
-
Could just watch strictly instead!

Or is it X factor, always something (rubbish) to take your mind off what is important in life.
