Title: Most expensive Efes in Calis
Post by: busybee on July 12, 2010, 10:07:05 AM
Bollywoods (left at the bridge) charge an amazing 8L for an Efes after 9pm because they have have entertainment every evening.  They still have 4L on the board outside but when you go in they give you a drinks menu with different prices. How can they justify this didnt pay 8L to listen to Dennis Davey or any other entertainment that has been provided by bars.

That is scandalous - well done on flagging this up. I have noticed the they are spending a lot of money on advertising - obviously looking to recoup their expenditure. Inflated non-advertised drinks prices is no way to go about this :-\

I totally disagree with bars putting prices up when they have entertainment on - is this common prectice in Calis [?] Certainly up in Ovacik it isn't. For example Four Seasons has entertainment on 3 times a week - live band, live singer and 2 sets of dancers in addition to their own in-house entertainment. This obviously doesn't come cheap, however, none of the cost is passed onto customers!

Totally agree Linda. The food is very good. The service is good and the entertainment is very good. Party Night there they give  prizes away and never put any extra on the bills. I don't know if it is common practise in Calis but at the bars we have been too it isn't. I will certainly avoid Bollywoods. Such a shame because the food and atmosphere are really good and the staff are very good. When will these bars learn.

Its interesting that this is starting to happen- or maybe its just this one place. As regular visitors to Spain we fully expect to pay slightly more for drinks in the cabaret/show bars that we chose to visit (occasionally) and have been suprised at the quality of the acts- usually of a very high standard!I suppose they have to find their wages from somewhere?

As a matter of interest what is the entertainment there? The staff at Bollywood are really nice people and we had a lovely meal there one night. I am very dissapointed because I have been telling everyone to try this place.

Cabaret shows in the Spanish resorts tend to be quality entertainment hence the inflated drinks prices. The entertainment in Calis is hardly what I would call quality but better than nothing . No disrespect to the entertainers, visa/work permits do not allow the professional singers etc to work in Turkey as they do the EU. I have indeed enjoyed many a night with Denis and his daughter and the new guy, Lordy, Dawn Beach have had on recenly. More than I can say I enjoyed the waiter with the Michael Jackson mask from the bar across the street. What I did find hysterically funny was the way we were all kept in the bar , spending money from 8.30 when "Michael was due on stage" until he finally appeared at 10.15. By then we were too pi**ed to care.:D:D

I agree Busy...the bar should not have TWO sets of drinks prices..that is wrong...however you did say you were given a drinks menu with the inflated prices...so it is up to you whether or not you pay or indeed stay...God has given most of us 2 feet...walk with them if you are unhappy...I would.

Should the cost of entertainment be passed on to the customer? you could argue this point for ever.
Depending on the quality of the entertainment....how much entertainment is put on....is the bar using the entertainment to increase custome (obviously)..how much the bar charges when there is no entertainment compared to when there is.

If a bar charges 4 TL for an EFES without entertainment is it wrong to expect to pay 5TL for a bar that does

The choice really is yours!!!

The entertainment is a guitarist and a lady singer, they are supposed to very good but doesnt justify doubling the price of Efes.

Maybe I'm being a bit thick but I thought the point of putting on entertainment was to increase profits by getting more punters through the door. Not by screwing them with inflated prices [:(!]

No Kenkay...don't think you are being a bit thick (to quote)
But as you quoted me in full...and I was neither agreeing or disagreeing just debating.
Please re read what I said.
It is your choice..there are plenty more bars to go to
A hike of double is rediculous and as you say and that is screwing the customers.
But an increase of 1tl if the bar provides good entertainment does not seem unreasonable

If a bar charges 4 TL for an EFES without entertainment is it wrong to expect to pay 5TL for a bar that does....The choice really is yours!!!

My thoughts are that the prices should be the same as if you put good entertainment on it pays for itself in increased turnover, volume increased = profit increased

if you are sat in a bar all night watching " the entertainment " but make 1 x efes last all night, why should someone who has maybe 8 efes be penalised by the increase in price ????  why not charge say 2-3 ytl for entrance. seems the fairest way.if you dont want to watch dont pay to enter !! just my opinion...........city hull

having been a contributer to the Calis Beach Forum for several years it really does amaze me with this fixation that some people have over a Bottle of Efes
Having had Kismet Bar for nearly 4 years I could tell you some stories believe me.

One customer actually confronted me about 3 years ago and said and i quote.
I can buy a bottle of efes from the supermarket for 1.75 tl..Why do you sell it for 3......I was speechless.

Another customer who used a bar with nearly no facilities.....ie a bad toilet...no aircon or heating...told me I should take a leaf out of that bar and reduce my prices....ok I would charge him 50k less as long as he didnt use my aircon/heating/umbrellas/ or toilets....and never ask for ice....just two examples of the mentality of some people.

Going back to the subject of entertainment. If you are providing entertainment on a regular basis (a few times a week) then the price of the said Efes should reflect accordingly........but all of the time. Then as I repeatedly keep saying Joe Public can decide for themselves on what price they are prepared to pay.

Charging an entrance fee would be difficult to do as most bars are open fronted with outside tables..This could only work in a nightclub situation.

With the Lira bad against the pound and interest rates down Turkey is not the cheap place it once was and I understand these days each Lira counts...afterall it represents 42p.

You could always do what example number 1 suggested....stand out side  buy your beer from a supermarket and listen to the show for free.....lol.....laugh out loud!!!!

You've gotta laugh havn't you

so a party of 10 people who drink say 10 efes each @ extra 2 ytl each drink, will pay 200 ytl to watch the entertainment !!! which is nearly £100 extra ( without any food or other drink types )..

Our local had some entertainment on last Sunday - the World Cup Final. They normally sell Tetley's at £2.10 a pint. Sunday they had Boddington's on at £1.00 a pint.

The place would have been pretty full anyway but it was heaving on Sunday.

In some bars in Calis I would pay extra NOT to have to listen to the 'entertainment'!

If you have not run a bar in turkey you simply do not know the 'rules' they have to live by; in this case the two guy who run the Kismet bar. Turkey; the open market we enjoy in England is generally closed. In my opinion 'they' look after themselves to the detriment of the majority, including their own: there is no genuine competition to drive down prices for the likes of me and you and there won't be until a meritocracy is introduced. (oh how I love irony)

RESPECT to the Kismet and all who sail in here.

Hi Steve...........We are in Fethiye by the Harbour. There is an ugly blue building which is the Cultural Centre. With your back to it you face a small park and to the right is a strip of bars and restaurants. Kismet is next to the last
Look forward to seeing you.

Very true as some bars run 2 rates, tourist & regular/residents rates much the same as some barbers who have local & tourist prices.

Yes C1 and some bars are off our list, the ones who want to charge residents the tourist prices, but then want us to support them in the winter months, when all tourists are buying beer in the UK at the same price all year round. You may not be aware, but if it was not for residents support and rejection of a price cartel at the beginning of the season you would have been paying a lot more for your EFES ,making your holiday even more expensive.Get real.

I paib 30euro for one beer in Istanbul, the bill was 600ytl but I got lucky, obviously it was not the kind of bar for the family lol

If your here on holiday and drinking in big rounds pay as you go, it's not always the price you have to watch.

We certainly don't have a seperate price list for locals/tourists. If people are in, and have had a good session, we always chuck a drink their way (not literally - well .. sometimes)!! I would be insulted if I was paying 5 when the person next to me is paying 4. I agree philrose, always a hot topic. And Laffa, with regards to Ian thinking that plastic thing is not big, I wouldn't want it near me!!!

captain john I travel to turkey on average 3-4 times a year spending 9 -12 weeks a year  for a few years so not a typical tourist. in the uk a pub charges what it wants or can get away with, and does not have special price for the expats etc. who in many cases seem to owe no loyalaty to any bar except that which charges the cheapest prices, how often have I read on here the price of beer being all important in the factor of if a place is any good or not. to me a place that has nice loos ( many for the girls) and good furniture etc and has welcoming staff etc is far more important than the 30 -50p a beer difference. I deride no pleasure in seeking out the lowest prices, hawking around checking out menu's etc. I will always try a place give it a fair shot if it seem expensive for what I get in return I won't go back simple really.

I applaud the resourcefulness of busybee in knowing that the "cheapest Efes in Calis" subject has been done to death on CBF over the years and reintroducing it by turning it on it's head :D

Efes. Buy it, don't buy it. Who cares. The cheapest place to get one is from your fridge. If you want someone else to keep it cold and wash your glass afterwards it's likely to cost more, and so it goes on. Any questions?
