Post by: kayakebab on August 15, 2011, 22:02:22 PM
Hi

Ive heard so many different stories and wonder if anyone can advise definitely

what are the rules for bringing British cars into Turkey?

some say 6 months, some say 2 years, some say it depends on residency, some say you can secure a bond at the bank...

and are the rules the same for British people bringing them as they are for a Turkish person bringing a British car?

It's 6 months still Lin, then out for 6 months.

You can only bring in for longer if you are retired and drawing state pension. Even then you have to have a bond in the bank for probably a lot more than the car is worth.

If you are in receipt of a UK state pension then you are able to import a UK car but you have to pay a hefty bond and it's a real fuss to get it all registered.
If you just bring in an UK car it can stay for 6 months in a year and you can do it twice over 2 years.
So bring it in for 6 months and then you have top remove it from the country or put it in Dalaman customs care for 6 months and pay the charges for storage. You can then repeat this process once more. After that it must be permanently removed from the country or given to Turkish Customs. It is put in your passport and legally you cannot leave Turkey without putting it in the care of Turkish customs.
Hope that helps.

If it's a UK car I would think the same applies...it's the car not the person..

There are special concessions for ''Turkish workers abroad'' and I would suggest he contacts the Turkish Embassy in London to see whether he qualifies.

You can also keep your car here if you have a work permit, press card or on a student visa but as explained before. It is not worth the hassle and price at all.
Also remember that if you bring the car in as a tourist for 6 months, you would still have only a 90 day visa but your car has 6 months which means you either have to take the car to change your visa, impound it into customs as you do your border run or get a residence permit.
