Title: Private Opulence and Public Squalor
Post by: Colwyn on February 24, 2017, 10:57:22 AM
I have just come back from Madeira. That island shares with its mother country, Portugal, an obvious civic pride expressed through its public parks and gardens - indeed in Portugal it seems all parks are also gardens. They are well laid-out and meticulously maintained. Of course, we couldn't afford that in Britain. We couldn't pay the wages of gardening staff or buy plants and fertilizer. Local authorities around the country are cutting their parks budgets; Newcastle is the worst with 97% cuts over the last 5 years. Our parks are poorly maintained and are deteriorating - encouraging litter and vandalism. But of course we have to save money; we can't afford to have pleasant public parks and gardens any more. We're only the fifth wealthiest country in the world, doncha know.

We can't afford to fund our national health service properly. We can't afford to support our education service in the way needed. We can't afford to keep police officer levels up. And we seem to have abandoned the prison service. Things are falling apart all around us. But cuts must have priority. If we didn't have cuts how could we afford to lower income tax for millionaires; how could we afford to bribe Japanese companies to stay in the UK post-Brexit; how could we afford shiny new Trident missile submarines; how could we afford HS2 to bring even more wealth into London?

So Britain today has sunk into the morass that J.K.Galbraith long ago described as "an atmosphere of private opulence and public squalor" (The Affluent Society, 1958).

Litter and vandalism isn't encouraged by cuts. The cause of that is arseholes breeding even more arseholes.

Amazing that Britain is such a terrible place, however, immigrants and refuges will travel miles across many countries in Europe just to get to the U.K.

I really thought you of all people might do a bit of research Colwyn! Tut ut!

In 2015 the taxpayers of Portugal received from the European Union  81 euros per head over what they contributed. Since its accession to the EU the country has received from the European Union EUR 64414 million over what it has contributed.

I did do some research: I went to Portugal and walked around some of their parks and I came back to the UK and walked around some of ours. Theirs are splendid and ours are not - and they are deteriorating. Portugal is one of Europe's poor countries and we are supposedly the 5th wealthiest on the planet.

[But a most ingenious way of getting your EU obsession into the thread, Stoop! Well done.]

Portugal have a net gain of €81 per resident. Imagine what we could do with that times 60 million.

I love Portugal but most of the improvements I've seen over the last 15 years are due to their net gain from the EU.

Not just Syrian many foreigners want to come to Great Britain.  They all cross many countries borders to get to the U.K. They could stay in any of the countries they cross, but they choose not to.
Not only refuges . How about the French guy who was not a refuge, but left a job in Paris two years ago, to come to the U.K with his wife and 8 children? He has a £425,000 house and he is on benefits and also getting child allowance, because Britian was in the E.U.  He moved freely over.

Well this thread has indulged Stoop with his EU obsession and now JH with her immigrant obsession. Who's next? Someone from the Anti-Universal Literacy Society?

Yeah, but did you not hear about the guy from Upper Battü who came to the UK with his THREE wives and FORTY SEVEN children - got a fourteen bed council house and a mobility double decker bus all because he said he was a refugee.

Shocking if you ask me.  Sooner we're out of this Europe carry on the better, all these bloody foreigners stealing our jobs and houses.

By it's very nature, isn't a forum a platform for people to voice their opinions which for me are not necessarily obsessions any more than yours are Colwyn.

Lotty - you're dead right.  However, that also means that Colwyn is allowed to obsess about other folks obsessions, even if they're just opinions.

Steady on John! This is the "Grumpy" section and you are not really sounding grumpy enough (except when you are in your Tunbridge Wells persona)..

Yes, Lottie, but anyone voicing an opinion that Colwyn or J.T. Do not agree with seem to be not welcome on this Forum.
It is very true that many immigrants are not refuges, but many come to this country to work, which I have no problem with. We have quite a few Polish and Eastern Europeans in our local town, all working hard,a lot working on the fish which is not the most pleasant job, so good on them.  it is the ones that come to take advantage of the benefit system that annoy me.  I am only obsessed with immigrants who do not work for a living in the U.K.    I also think that the guy with eight kids, who came specification to the U.K. To abuse our benefit system should be sent home and I hope he will be once we are out of the E.U.

I certainly don't have an obsession with the EU. Far from it - im sick to death of it.

Maybe it's you has has an obsession with running down the UK? A bit like lquite a few of those who voted remain and now hope the country goes down the pan so they can be proved correct.

Have to say I agree with Colwyn’s first post - every bit of it.
It has been proved time and time again that immigrants are net contributors to the U.K. economy.  Our NHS would collapse without them, as would many industries like farming and hotels.
I was once a policewoman, and did a lot of city centre beat work.  There were always ten to twelve policemen/women on duty there night and day.  I visited the town where I worked (Doncaster) a few weeks ago and didn’t see a single one.  I recently travelled to Devon to see my son, and never saw a police car either on the journey there or back.  What I did see in Devon were scores of homeless people in shop doorways.
At home, the roundabouts near my home used to be covered in beautiful flowers;  now they’re concreted over.
We are not in this all together.  The rich are getting richer and the poor are paying the price for the mistakes of bankers who couldn’t tell the difference between banking and gambling.
