The press and the public builds England up as the team that is going to win the world cup. It all then falls flat and the papers have a field day on the so called poor performances. The players are under pressure just being at the tournament but it must be unbearable when the media and public pressure is added. The truth is that since 1970 England has not had a team that really could win the world cup. The team that played today was the cream of English football and how many of them would get a place in the top European clubs. England play with their hearts and are not that skillful. This was supposed to be the best team in a generation. Most of the squad will not be around for the next world cup. What is a big worry is that the players coming through are not as good as today's team.

Blame the manager and the players but the media and the public must also carry some of the blame. The public and press need to be more realistic.

It's all about motivation and team spirit Keith. Cappello hasn't got a clue what that is, he can't even put players in their rightful positions!! Redknapp is English and knows how to get the best out of players, just look at what he  has done with Spurs!!

Personally,I'd send them home Ryanair class. Disgraceful performances in all 4 games. We see great individual performances week in week out in the Premier League. This lot can't find any self motivation, as if playing Germany was not enough.Under achieved is an understatement. I seriously hope the press slaughter them. They showed no commitment to the fans who have spent thousands to support them. They all need to take a long hard look in the mirror & ask do I really justify £100.000 a week ? But a doubt if they will !!!!

Bobby Robsons team give it a good go in 1990.

The England fans should be allowed to have a realsitic expectation that the 8th ranked team in the world will progress further in the World Cup than their team did today.

Redknapp is one of the best managers in the World Russ, I agree with you - but Paul Daniels couldn't even get this squad to play as a team. Harry would be bonkers to take the job (as would anyone). Look what it did for the managerial careers of Graham Taylor, Terry Venables, Sven - careers where all the impressive stuff (ALL the impressive stuff) came BEFORE becoming England manager. As jobs go, it's a career ender and best avoided.

BBC Match Stats read as follows

                    Germany       England

Possession           49             51

Attempts on target    9             11

Attempts off target   6              6

Corners               4              6

Fouls                 7              4

I must have been watching a different game.

The problem is they are made to look great players in our premier league, because they have some of the best foreign players in the world playing with them. Take them out and put them together as an England team and with the exception of one or two they are average players.
Until we have a cap on the amount of foreign players playing in each team every week. it will get worse. It is easier for a club to spend a few million on a player from abroad than run centres of excellence to bring English talent through.

I agree with a reasonable expectation to do well but the supporters and press just get carried away.

England in 1990 still did not win it. The press wanted Bobby Robson sacked before the tournament started. It was the WC that England went to with the least amount of expectation to do well in over the past 40 years.

If you go by world rankings then today a German victory was the right result.

Man for man I don't see a team that comes near to England. Certainly not Germany. It is not unreasonable expectation that the team with the highest collective value should be there or thereabouts at the final.

Also, if FIFA World rankings are one of the guides to calculate outcomes, we wouldn't have been playing Germany today, having qualified with 9 points out of 9.

England would have struggled to beat Ghana with a performance like that.
