I have a feeling this MAY have been done before, but here goes anyway.......
My thoughts turned the other day to various characters I have seen in Calis over the years and how some of these possess a Phoenix like ability to disappear from one place and then resurrect themselves in another.
I wondered who was the longest surviving person to have maintained continuous service in one place without the need to leave “their restaurant” and then reappear in “their new business” ??
So......your nominations please.
The rules are : same place, same establishment (no name changes), continuous presence ( no breaks ) and still there now.
I have two possibilities : Dr John at the Carretta and Bayram at the Hamsi Pansiyon.
Any other nominations ???

Oben at Obens
-
George and his two sons Savash & Hasan (and there Mum who makes the puffy bread) at George's known then for 13 years now and they are there every year. No name changes, same staff.
-
Senay and nuran 16 yrs plus at gunisik [ frank cannons ]
-
Cenap and Kathy, cafe Pazar. Been there for years. ;D
-
Kathy is no longer at Cafe Pazar, Cenap has a new younger blonde partner now. Plus their place moved over the road, so not in the same location. Sadler, did you not visit this year? If so you would have noticed the "change"
-
George at Georges has been in business for 30 years, but forgot to mention, we have only been coming to the area for 13 years.
-
Dr John at the Carretta
Would that be the same "Dr John" who used to sell massages on the beach in the 1990s and after that at the Letoon I think?
-
Was that not Gerald Colwyn ?
He made a desperate mess of the present Mrs H arm >:(
-
I would nominate a gentleman whose name I have never known. :-[ :-[ :-[.
The runs the shop just up from Letoon and seems to be there morning, noon and night
-
I am sure that many of the long serving "Carrettees" will enjoy the imagery of Dr John selling massages but I am sure that it would not have been him.
Do any of his long standing guests know how long Dr John has been there ???
-
Was that not Gerald Colwyn ?
Quite right H. My memory led me astray. I remember some Turkish people loathed him and thought he was a pervert. Hope Brenda's encounter didn't leave permanent scars - physical or mental.
-
Joseph, from the bar of the same name, must have been there some time now. He was the first person we spoke to when we started going to Calis, some 20 years back, when he worked for Maurice at the old Post Office. Also agree the guy who has the little shop along from the Letoon has been there a long time, always happy to see you.
-
The grumpy git that is manager or owner of the Rose Beach or Rosary Beach.(the most unpleasant Turk I have ever come across in over twenty years)
-
Cemmy from Ayden pida?
-
One of the longest and most helpful and who has not moved as such, must be from here.........Scunner
-
Yes he has, he is now living in Perthchester. He got kicked out of Turkey... :D :P ;)
-
I dont want to hijack the thread but Im sooo glad I am not the only one who encountered the grumpy ole man at Rosary Beach we would never stay there again, didnt much like the hotel anyway but he was the icing on the cake for me to not return!
Re the guy at the shop up from the Letoon would that be the little market you go down some steps to if so totally agree lovely friendly guy
-
yes, that is the shop - lovely man.
-
yes the lovely shop man, we call him the 'Bowie' man - allows bows to you with his greeting!
-
Another one is MEMHET the head waiter at the Oykun Hotels 20 yrs service to the Ocek family
-
Rushie at just bout every place on the front ;D
-
This post goes to show there is quite a few long serving charecters in calis we all remember for different but mostly nice reasons that all add to make calis so special, long may it continue
-
Is it really relevant to post on here that Genap has a new younger blonde partner???????????

Well, you've brought it up again. The rest of us had moved on.
-
Well whatever!!! but as this happened a good while ago some people obviously have not moved on

Need to get your facts right here. This post was to nominate people who had been around a long time. One member's post said.
"Cenap and Kathy, cafe Pazar. Been there for years"
So, the member did not know the current situation. They now have the information that you obviously thought they should know, so they can move on. It is clear that people who visit this place all the time would know this, but, not everyone who does not visit on a regular basis would. Perhaps too, it is best the poster should know, because they could easily walk into this restaurant and enquire about someone who is no longer there. ;)
-
I understand what this post is about but as a friend of both Cathy and Cenap I fail to see the significance of the description you give.
of Cenaps new lady within this topic.
Would Cenap and Cathy are no longer together sufficed?????
-
Wouldn't it have been far better if you'd raised your concerns in a PM instead of on the open forum ? Then the OP could have asked for their post to be edited if they thought it necessary.
-
Not forgetting Edi and his little kopek at the silver shop :)
We genuinely didnt know Cathy and Cenap had split up, had a lot of time for Cathy she is lovely didnt really know Cenap that well, i feel Cafe Pazar wont be the same without Cathy there :(
-
Let it go ! Let it go ! Let it go ! ;)

Yes but as KKOB already stated, the only person giving the blonde new partner any publicity in recent days is you. I hadn't even seen the original (JH) post at all, and have only now because of your entry into the debate on here, much later.
In real terms the topic had long since moved on past that, with no great interest in it at all. As a friend of both of them you are doing well at now being the only person bringing greater publicity than the post originally managed itself - in regard to the new blonde partner.
Feel free to continue bringing publicity to it, using the medium of complaining publically about it to bring it all up again :D
-
How long as the new blonde partner been there?
-
And how old is he 8)

Davybill,
We called to Cafe Pazar inn May to get a DVD that Hassan did not have. We noted the changes then. Have not been back since and no plans to return, already reviewed the breakfast on CBF at the time.
Back on Track......
Someone else who has been around a long time seems to be the flower man. However, I think maybe he is getting a bit old to carry that basket of flowers. He now has a pitch on the road that goes up to Scarletts. His flowers have always been 10TL a bunch, great value, I can fill two vases wit them. We often wonder will he ever increase the price, particularly with the Lira soaring up over the last couple of years.

Strangely I only remember the flower man from recent years. Maybe no earlier than around 2011 in fact.
-
Sorry i didnt mean to rake up re Cathy and Jenap again I had meant to say on my original post I would only be making the one comment on the thread about their split, I genuinely didnt know about it and really like Cathy, I was trying to think when I last went there as Murat does my Dvds, we used to alternate between Murat and Hasan but last time we asked Hasan he did not want us taking the book from Nil to a bar a few doors away as he said he did not like them in there so we didnt bother, completely cant be doing with all that c@@p...
Anyway it was start of season so maybe nothing had changed then and last time Derek went down on his own to get the dvds, i dont think we went to Cafe Pazar for drinks or food at all last season...

Hi Scunner,
I always buy flowers but I to do not remember how long the Flower man has been around. The first night we go out I look for him to get flowers and then buy them every week for the following 5 weeks. Do this in May/June and September/October, so,, possibly this is why I am thinking he has been around a long time.
I was reading last week that a Gypsy woman who used to visit the shops in Fethiye had died and was wondering was it the same woman who sells the roses in Calis. Always loved her twinkly skirts. Now, how long has she been selling roses in Calis??
-
Gypsy lady who died was called Yildiz and worked around Fethiye. Don't think she ever worked in Calis. Older lady, you might have seen her in the fish market or around Paspatur though.
-
I can remember the Flower Man from around the summer of 2003. That's if it's the same fella of course. Anyone got a photo of him ?

I remember her. I think her and I had a clash of personalities. Probably her fault though. ;)

No picture but he looks like Willie Thorne. :)
Lissa, Thanks for that. I will expect to see the Calis gypsy lady again when we are over. ;D

Price just went up last week now 15TL....

We fell out some time round about 2004, and it was definitely her fault.

No problem, I expected it, still cheap.
-
Which flower lady in Pasoatur? The one who always collared us was quite a plump very friendly woman who seemed to be an in charge.
-
That's the one I know too Lotty. I saw her in Fethiye just before Christmas &, as ever, we exchanged pleasantries
-

Yeah, could be. Except he wasn't bald on top. Didn't have dark hair. Didn't have a moustache. Didn't wear a blue jacket. Didn't wear a grey shirt. Apart from that, a dead ringer. :)
-
Well KKOB, the one that's being talked about is exactly like this picture. You must be thinking of someone else
-
He is different to the others in that he has a huge basket full of flowers, rather than a few roses nicked from someone's garden
-
He really does look like that photo Toky :D
-
Yes that is Willy Thorn the flower man, but there is another flower man who is taller
and thinner than Willy, who as been around a few years.
he just walks around with a few roses.but doesn't say anything.
always see him on the Fethiye/Calis dolmus.
-
Walking around with a few roses IMHO does not make you a flower man (or woman). I know the guy you mean, I assumed he was a gypsy too.
Walking around with a huge heavy basket full of flowers that are hand tied and have a lovely selection of different flowers in each bunch all wrapped in cellophane and a set price being charged for each bunch, again IMHO does make you a flower man.
-
IMHO, I'm sure the BSI audit team would appreciate your input the next time they assess Flower Sellers. :)
-
IMHO, I think after buying so many flowers both in Calis and always buying when we are elsewhere abroad i.e., a bunch of flowers in Tallin for our cabin on a cruise, always bring back flowers and bulbs from the Flower Market in Amsterdam. I got a lovely bunch of Bird of Paradise flowers in Maderia to bring home and of course at home in Scotland where I usually buy about 4 bunches per week. I think I may know just a little about this subject.
I would be happy to be a consultant on flower buying, glad you appreciate my expertise KKOB, put a word in for me will you? If I ever get to the wilds of Wales I would be happy to help you too. ;) ;D :P : :)
-
Oh good, a clash of militant humilities.
-
In my not so humble opinion, we should get back on topic ;)
-
O.K. John you next...

He is nothing like a gypsy Jacqui. he has got a nice suit and always dressed smart. I think hes a guy just trying to make a kuros,
as he must be well in his 70s.

Yes the little guy who has the shop just up from the Letoon has been there at least 20 years. We first met him when we used to stay at the Letoon and used to visit every day and always buy our drinks and ice-creams from him, and even though we no longer stay at the Letoon we always make a point of going to visit him. He would have to be one of the nicest people in Calis and is at his shop from first thing in the morning to last thing at night, funnily enough after all these years I don't know his name, but I know him and his family live above the shop.
-
I'm wading into this one , I'll see your chap near the Letoon, and raise you with someone who was there on our first visit in 1988 , the 'little man' in the shop on the corner opposite to the Eroz. ' Gul' market. Now I don't know if this will qualify as in fairness he has moved as his shop was originally under the then Kumsal pension which became the Harem and he moved and expanded to his current location ! However he's been a purveyor of 'essentials' since we first arrived!
-
Yes – I had thought of the guy at the Gul myself........ under the founding rules of the poll he would be disallowed, but I have now signed an Executive Order which has amended the rules. Business owners ( or their staff ) who have moved premises ONLY, but have continued to trade under the same name are now allowed.
This would allow the Cafe Pazaar to compete, but I think the Guy at the Gul might be the leader.
( I still think Bayram at the Hamsi Bar ( next to the Mutlu ) is a contender..... any one got any verified dates for him ? )
-
Bayram was certainly there in the late 90's (98 I think was the first time we called in).
-
The big guy who owns Ayden Pide (cant remember his name) on the roundabout plus the 2 brothers who have the corner shop on the other side of the roundabout i have been using both for 12 years now
-
The big guy is Cem/Jimmy
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
-
That's him seems a nice guy even when I haven't used his place for a wile always says hi or waves
-
Bayram is slightly later than Gul man but not much!
-
Another character of long standing came to mind........ The rather fine gentlemen ( whose name I can never recall ) who owns the Bambu Bar and the hotel next door ( the Aytur, I think).
His daughter, Fidan, currently runs the Bambu but her dad was there for a very long time.
He is unfortunately disallowed from this award as he is now practically retired and can’t be said to be still working.
However, I think he would qualify for the Academy’s Lifelong Achievement award.
