Title: Airline advice Jet2 or Onur Air?
Post by: Groovegal on April 15, 2011, 00:01:21 AM
Hi everyone

Getting close to booking my revisit to Calis and have been pricing up my flights from Glasgow.  My question is about Airlines until this week Jet2 was coming up the cheapest at £189 plus about £50 pp for baggage then up pops the option for a charter airline baggage included for £10 more called Onur Air.

Just wondering what peoples experiences are with either/both airlines as I havent flown with either before

Thanks for any replies  :)

Onur tend to change times/ cancel flights quite a lot. Of the two I'd choose Jet2 every time.

Onur give you 15kg hold luggage and 5kg hand luggage
Jet2.com have 22kg hold luggage and 10kg hand luggage
As Stoop says Onur change and cancel many flights, we have friends coming today, they booked Monday this week with Onur air to fly back to Doncaster on 4th May. They got a call Thursday to say the flight was cancelled and now have been offerd a flight 3 days earlier. I would reccomend Jet2.com out of the two mentioned

i have only used Onur before, and was a bit shocked when people started to clap when the plane landed in one piece......[?][?]

I was more shocked when people started to clap when it took off in one piece!

I've used both many times (although never Jet2 to Dalaman) and have had relatively few problems - no more than Thomas Cook and the others. Onur do change dates a lot but never happened to me. Jet2 are pretty decent.

OH no I was worried you all might say something like that!

You see the difference is almost £100 by the time you take baggage in to account, so I was hoping you would all say Onur Air was good lol

What to do, what to do

I would never ever use Onur again, even if they offered me a free flight, awful service & company. I can't speak for Jet 2 as I've not used their service.

Oh wait are Aegean Flights and Onur Air the same company?

The reason I ask is when I looked at the flight number I thought it was Onur Air but I just clicked on one of the advertisement banners on the forum for aegean air and its the same flight number in the quote from them.....

Onur air are a budget Turkish carrier, they use Aegean and H4u.co.uk to sell seats.

Can't really comment on Onur Air as I've never used them.  But with Jet 2, even though their baggage charges are pretty horrendous, it is a very generous allowance both for hand luggage and checked in bags.  We've flown with Jet2 on a few occasions and not had any problems.

I would use Onur Air every time as I get three holidays per year for the price of two with Jet2. As others have said Onur are very prone to changes but, fortunately, I can be very flexible :D

The second time we came out to Calis we used Onur Air. After one week we got to the Airport and there was no plane.  The next flight, we were told was in three days time.  We were lucky we had our villa to return to.  We have never used Onur again, no matter how cheap they are it's not worth it to us, as we both have to be back on time.

That's the crux of it really - if you are OK changing times/dates and/or even airports and want the cheapest option then Onur are the ones. I've used both and to be honest our Onur flights were OK and took off and landed as we expected. Jet 2 I have used a few times and never had a problem. They do seem to be pricier now though.

Hi haven't posted for a while but always love to read all the advice and comments from our members.
In the six years we have had our apartment we have probably used Onur about 15 times. In the main they have been fine no complaints . Until this year that is, flights changed by up to three days ect. Usually flights from Glasgow have been on a Saturday evening but currently May/June they are going out Saturday coming back Tuesday , which in our case has now changed to a Thursday . This turns what was a two week holiday into almost three weeks. Not a problem but it uses up more precious annual leave earlier in the year than I bargained for.I don't want to cancel as we go the flights really reasonably ,I think about £140 return. However this year when the flights come out I think we will think seriously if it is worth the hassle for next year. So if changes and inconvenience are not an issue for you I would say go for Onur otherwise steer well clear!

Hi, I'm now concerned as I have booked to return in September with Onur. If they cancel and change your flight do you have to pay extra for the new flight?  Also, do the cancellations usually occur out of season more than in season? thanks

Usually do not charge extra  ......... and offer you your money back if you prefer, without paying a cancellation fee!!!!

Thanks Anna, will have to wait until September and see now! Think I will go for one of the bigger companies next time, save the worry!

We have used Jet 2 for the last couple of years, and we havent had any problems with them, they left on time, which is more than most of the other airlines had delays. I would say very reliable but they are not that cheap.:D:D

We have used Onur 3 times each time having flight times/days changed, using them again in september from Edinburgh and Iam expecting them to change this to a Glasgow departure, for some reason I have a gut feeling about. If they do this then I will just take a refund of money , hence no hotel booked yet for this year.I hold my breath[:(!]

Have never used Jet2 so cant comment. have used Onur Air many times and on the whole have been lucky apart from any December flights I have booked with them my arrival airport always seems to get changed from Dalaman to Bodrum but this could be more to do with the fact Dalaman seems to offer very limited flights in December. Flew with Onur Air last week outward journey got away with 18 kilos of luggage and no weighing of hand luggage this is pure luck I think as to who is on the check in desk, tho dont believe we would have got away with it had it been Thomas Cook. Both flights were on time and we only had a slight change of 10 minutes to both flights. No body clapped on take off but they did when we landed Friday night :D 8)

I've never seen it in the States - people are too busy turning on their mobile phones as soon as the wheels touch down - on Onur Air I think its because they're grateful & amazed that the pilots manage to land such cr*p planes safely

Here's the reason I won't fly with them again. Too many reviews like this one.. and we have to get back for work:

Dalaman - Newcastle 2010 : flight was changed 4 times between 3rd August and 10th Sept. Finally, 3 days into our holiday we were voicemailed on our mobile to be informed that our flight home had been cancelled, leaving us to purchase a suitable alternative. This caused enormous expense and distress. When we got to Dalaman Airport for our flight home (with a different airline), we found that our original flight was in fact flying. I would not recommend this airline, and would never use them again. They seem very disorganised and have no customer care.

However - as I stated above - if you can afford to risk the possibility of major changes/cancellation/flying home to a different airport, then you will probably get a cheaper flight - if you book well in advance.

Completely understand your point of view Stoop and in your position mine would be the same. I don't like statements such as Hillside's as they do absolutely no good. Of the 6,000 members on here probably 20% fly with Onur Air. Of them a further 10% probably hate flying and only "tolerate" it to visit the country they love. How will such a crass, ill-informed statement make them feel[?]

I must agree, Onur planes are no different from what I have experienced to any other airline - some a bit tired and some that look pretty new. Jet2 are *exactly* the same, some old some very new indeed by the look of them. The best plane I was ever on was when I used to go to Dubai - an Emirates plane that was brand new and full of bells and indeed whistles. The worst plane I was ever on was about 3 weeks later - a right old banger, guess who's plane that was...an Emirates flight to Dubai.

Yes they have some old planes but so do many other companies. The two we flew on last year were fine as far as looking at them was concerned. They also took off and landed and did the bit in between without any problem.

It doesn't matter how new or old a plane is really - as long as it's maintained correctly. Jet2 look new because they are all painted up and re-furbed inside but the average age is 22.5 years!!! Onur's fleet averages 13.3 and TC (UK)12.3. Get the info here if you want to see how old a particular plane is and where it has been for most of it's life:

Have used Onur lots of times and have only had slight time changes that did not matter to us. As far as value for money you cannot beat them we managed to take 4 of us for the last 4 years for cheaper than it cost or 2 people with any of their competitors. Lets just say you get what you pay for and I am happy with that, plus leg room is much better than Thomas Cook sardine cans but each to their own you pays your money and you takes your chance.  By the way have never flown with Jet2 so cannot comment on their level of service.
