I have not paid ours yet but I did read on Facebook that people were saying it had gone up a lot this year!
Unfortunately I find it hard to re find things like the council tax thread on Facebook which is why I still love Cbf as so easy to find what you are looking for  :)

Maybe to do with all the canal work and the cost of the new promenade to Fethiye from Calis. Someone has to pay for it. I'm sure there's more things they have spent on.

Ours was £30 in Ciftlik last year. If they put infrastructure in I'd gladly pay double. Feel for the locals though.

Also you may wonder how the locals can afford a 100% increase. But in truth it is all on tapu value and many long term locals have tapus with a value from decades ago, so their actual payment is doubling but from next to nothing. In the medium term past you needed to show at least a modest increase in value on the tapu, and that means increasing the annual council tax payment. In the more recent past the local authority set the tapu value and it isn't something daft like £6,000 anymore. In fact, in Calis area some are being valued at (and maybe even above) market value and there is no negotiation.

So the moral of the story is if your council tax is low now, moving will soon wipe that little joy away. It's always nice to hear about people like Stoop paying £30 a year. Very quaint. Our house when sold had the tapu value set for the new owners at a value meaning they will pay over £400 a year - and no, it wasn't a mansion - it is a reflection on how the authorities have tackled undervaluing at sale, and how they've made it a reflect the reality - and council taxes are in turn reflecting that these days    :)

Probably the biggest influence is that, since becoming part of Mugla Buyuksehir last April, central funding to Fethiye has been virtually halved. Furthermore, for instance road repairs have been devolved to local budgets. As such, the increase in council tax has more than likely had to be levied to at least to start to address this shortfall.

Repair the roads? Oh no, I enjoy the downhill slalom down my road everyday as I avoid the holes which are less 'pot' and more 'cave'.

As we are not back in Turkey until APRIL, we are wondering when payment is due. And is there a penalty for late payment.
Thanks
Hugh

Hi to all -  My council tax was paid today 21st April 2015 and has doubled also,  have no issue whatsoever with the new payments required based on the new infrastructures put in place over the last few years.
The roads, paths, street lights, walk way promenades and sit down areas have all been renovated well.  Compared to what council tax we pay in UK it is still very cheap, and agree that everything put into place needs to be paid for.

Jack you are absolutely right on the disgraceful state of the roads and areas following the Canalisation work, DSI money was available I believe for the canal work and no council money for the roads etc.and we are still in the literal mess 18-24 months later!

Briscoa the long list of projects you make above are not funded by the council tax we pay, basically that pays for the bins and rubbish/recycle to be done, which is why we are questioning the doubling of the tax, and the impact it has on poorer local Turks.  The other projects are mainly funded from central government grant to local councils.  And it looks like with last year's local council re-organisation shifting the economic power to Mugla; the national economic decline and of course peoples failure in this area, and in Mugla, to vote AKP, means that there is less money about for new or renewal projects in Fethiye.

Anyone know what happens if you just don't bother paying your council tax ?

I went in and paid nearly five years worth in Istanbul a few years ago (tenants hadn't paid) and took a right wedge with me.  Walked out only 478.53TL poorer including my late payment fine of 27TL!

No reminders sent that I could see, so maybe Fethiye is the same?

Why don't you try it and report back next year...

plus a fine of 1 tl.     Bit like the UK. !

If you left your rubbish outside your bin here in the U.K., that wouldn't get lifted either, so why moan about it,........the fact that the people who actually " OWN " the country, don't put all their crap inside the bins, won't change due to a few British immigrants moaning about it !!    Now, where is my key ??

Ultimately you need to show no outstanding balance when you come to sell or you can't get your Tapu transferred.
