When my youngest daughter first moved down to London several years ago she lived in Isleworth, just under the flightpath for planes approaching Heathrow.  I will never forget the first time we stayed with them and were woken by the first plane coming in that morning  :o (and every 90 seconds after that)   It really was very close!  It was not for people of a nervous disposition!!  They certainly didn't have any kind of secondary glazing as SuzzPuss describes, but were assured that you do get used to it.   : :)

And, amazingly, you do.  After just a few weeks you don't hear them anymore, except perhaps in the garden.  Mind you, I wasn't quite as close as Isleworth but I'd still guess it was true.    :D
