One Way Ticket!!!
« on: June 21, 2017, 21:03:45 PM »
Hi All,
Well seven years after joining the forum, I have now made the decision to do something I've wanted to do since my first vist to Turkey in 1996.....move there! It was originally planned for late next year, but a change in personal circumstances means that I have now decided to retire on 31 August and leave the UK on 10 October, having already taken a rental appartment at Sun Valley complex. Although I haven't been at all active on the site, I have actually visited fairly regularly and picked up some useful hints and info. I have made contact with "Inspector" and Mustapha has kindly agreed to help me with residency, banks, utilities etc...after I arrive in Calis.

At 65 it's a big move/life change, but I've always wanted to live in Turkey on a permanent basis, so now the main problem I'm going to have over the next three and a half months is containing the excitement!!!
And getting the Turkish language basics sorted out!!

I'm looking forward to getting out and about and involved in different aspects of Calis life and hopefully meeting many of you once I get settled in!!

All the very best - I hope it is everything you hope for  :)

Things I wish I'd known before I moved there (short list version)

Never lend anyone any money, ever
You can't buy saucepans with a long handle, just two little handles :D

Keep us informed on how it's going, we're all dead nosey  ;)

Congratulations - it is a wonderful adventure - my advice is: whenever possible try to do as the locals do and live as the locals live.

Your experience will be greatly enriched and so much easier on your wallet   :) Enjoy !!!

Have a great retirement. We had 6 fantastic years there and only returned to the UK becuase of Mrs KKOB's health issues. We'd be back there like a shot given the right circumstances.

How exciting. Buy yourself a dreamland intelliheat electric blanket, it will be your wisest investment. Also bring your warm dressing gown, some thermal jumpers n warm coat and uSox  Along with a hot water bottle for power cuts,a decent torch or some of them push on lights. All this with a good flask and you'll be set. Because after summer comes winter, and the nights can be pretty chilly. It's a great adventure I'm sure you will settle in, in no time at all. Like Scunner says, keep us posted we're nosey
Ps great choice with inspector, he did ours too.

All the best in moving, we moved here 7years ago and we still love the life here
The only reason we would move back to the UK would be health reasons,  we are both in our mid  70s now.
We see more of our family when they all visit us,as as they love to come over to Turkey,
they are mostly at work when we go once a year to the UK.
I'm sure you will settle in, and there are plenty of activitIes, around the Calis area if you feel the need.

Hope it works out for you holmej. It's very exciting isn't it?

Following on from Scunner's tips - Some things I've discovered since living here:

<> Turkey do NOT make any cheese that even remotely resembles cheddar. Despite what the cheese man will tell you.

<> Winter here is warm outside in the sun and like a fridge inside the house.

<> It is acceptable (just) to wear fleece trousers in winter to go to the local shop.

<> Microwaves are not a common appliance here and microwave plate covers are practically unheard of - bring some with you.

<> A silent slight raising of the eyebrows and tilt upwards of the chin means 'No'

<> You will become very popular with friends in the UK you didn't know you had and unearth family members you forgot about who all coincidentally 'love
      Turkey'

<> You will derive untold of pleasure from drying all your washing outside in the space of 2 hours in the summer

<> You don't have to wash and iron your bedding ever again. The laundrettes here are cheap and will do it all for you.

<> The local car wash will wash all your rugs

<> You can leave your motorbike helmet on the bike and it will still be there when you come back from shopping

<> No one will ever give way to you when you are driving. You will wait FOREVER to get out of a side road onto a busy main road if you are waiting for
      someone to let you out.

Others will tell you more holmej I'm sure. :D
