Entertainment for Europeans
« on: July 27, 2013, 15:50:15 PM »
Does anyone agree with me that the standard of night time entertainment for foreigners in the Fethiye area leaves a lot to be desired?
Once you've seen one waiter dancing, very badly, topless, on a bar, you've seen em all.  Same goes for the karaoke singers who think they are world beaters, but in actual fact, they are Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble & Elvis Presley 'murderers'.
We have recently lost a few very good cabaret acts, including my personal favourites - Andrew Sings, to the ridiculous Turkish work permit rules, which prevents such acts from ever being granted these permits.
By all means grant as many permits as requested to Turkish acts,  but allow SOME permits to European acts too, just so that cash rich foreign tourists & residents alike can have a choice in their entertainment genre, whether it be Turkish, English, Scandinavian, German or Russian!
The performances these foreign acts provide only serves to provide greater income for the Turkish owned bars, & surely that must be a good thing. I know some bars will probably have to close now that the influx of holiday cash will cease.
Good Luck to Andrew & Glen, who are having to leave Turkey now to continue with their chosen profession, & I feel sorry for the fan base these acts have built up.

I think that you will find that what you write of, has more to do with Turkey rightfully,(whether we "Europeans" agree with it or not), applying it's version of the Performing Rights Licences & Certificates, than "work permits" , my friend !! I personally, believe that there is more to this state of affairs than meets the eye, but we shall have to "wait & see" .

I have seen a few posts in various places about this but no detail or explanation and am interested in what the changes are if anyone has time to explain what has happened/is happening re performances re performer/artists. Thanks

I would agree that entertainment for holidaymakers is generally very poor, having suffered many of the examples you cited. There have been a few exceptions over the years, most notably the entertainment provided by Scarlett Bar a number of years back which was of a superb standard. But generally average to rubbish.

My feeling is that the new licence situation is more someone waking up to a money making opportunity than any effort to protect performing rights or wanting to legislate the local entertainment scene.

I hope Shelley is still up at the Kings Garden as she is one great singer and a lovely lady.

Ian from Kismet is better than your average singer here.. He was Midlands entertainer of the year at one time.. he has done many of the concerts here unpaid I hasten to add... We loved Dennis Davey.. Not a great singer he would be the first to admit but his entourage certainly had good voices.. He and they gave us many nights of entertainment in the Winter months and also performed free for The 3cs on many an occasion.. To be honest I have never seen other than below average entertainers in other holiday resorts.. You need to go further afield and pay good money for that..

Mercury, Chrissie told me that Shelley sings at 3C's evens too.  As entertainment in the area goes we found her very good.  She certainly knows how to put on a show for a crowd of people.

Recently paid a visit to Antalya to see"Fire of Anatolia"show at the Gloria Aspendos theatre, this is entertainment of the highest order and well worth the effort getting there.Bought the top price tickets and were treated like VIPs escorted to our seats and the staff made sure we had cushions on which to sit.
Stayed overnight at a small hotel in Belek just 20 mins easy drive away from the theatre,
