Just reading on FB that the government has taken back ownership of the beaches at Olu Deniz, closed and pulled down 3 bars and removed all sunbeds. A lot of people out of jobs tonight by the sound of it :( >:( Will be run by the government tomorrow.
Anyone there now with any more information? Sounds a bit drastic :o
-
Just read it myself.
I can't believe the government has did this during peak tourism season
-
Which bars? Just what they need.. Is this the beginning of the end?
-
Don't know Olu Deniz that well but Tiki (?) bar was one of them
A few variations whats actually happening but seems to be a lot of anger over it. Slap bang in the middle of the tourist season! You couldn't make it up :(
-
Hoping that this new ruling will not scupper Dogan, Nichola and friends new venture.
-
aw thanks Scorcher - BIG hug coming your way.
No it doesn't affect us and it's really sad that this has happened slap bang in the middle of the season.
Lot of people now out of work but maybe the council will re employ them. And of course those that invested will have seen their investment trashed :-\
And of course it's not the first time this has happened.
Not sure who took who to court this time
This is the link to the only post I've seen so far

It doesn't say that much
Mahkeme kararına istisnaden Ölüdeniz Belcekız Plajı işletmesinin tahliyesi başladı. Turizmciler ise gereken neyse bir an önce yapılmalı, bu plaj boş olması turizme zarar verir dediler.
And this is the offered translation
The Evacuation of oludeniz oludeniz belcekiz beach has begun in the court decision. The Andaquaculture should be done as soon as they can, they said that this beach is empty, it would hurt the tourism.

This is an update from someone on one of the news sites that appears to know what's happened.
"Ok. This is the situation. The government 1.5 years ago leased the beach including bars sunbed etc out to 2 brothers. They had a contract for 5 years. At that time the tourist trade was very slow. The managers at the bars have worked so hard to build up trade and customers.
The government have seen that they are now making good business and want to cash in on it. They went to court and won. The brothers did not want the government to have the assets of the beach bars and the sun beds...They belong to the brothers..so all is being dismantled.
It is heart breaking for all concerned. These managers and staff have worked so hard and now they are unemployed . About 70 in all I believe. What about their families and rent they have to pay? The least the government could do would be to wait until the end of the season!!! So angry and upset!!!"
Here's a photo of some of the staff that have lost their jobs overnight.

Just a note that I think it might be the councils, Fethiye vs Muğla rather than the government, that information doesn't seem clear yet. It went to court and this is how the court decided. That said, from what else I have read the court case was in Ankara so maybe it was the government!

Wonderful how the rumour mill works. I heard that a group of Irish travellers had arrived and thrown the Tiki staff off the beach and then set about tarmacing it. There were burly ladies strolling through the crowds offering 'lucky heather', yellow dusters and wooden clothes pegs and the rose sellers had taken to the hills.

Just been on the Tonaz beach hotel webcam and it shows lorries filling up with sunbeds from the beach and driving off. Other webcams show the beach is empty of sunbeds. CRAZY.

It's an odd one. It'll all depend on who they actually entered into the lease with.
You'd think it was the municipality who has responsibility but I think Olu beach is controlled by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. If the bar is on land owned by the ministry then as they're based in Ankara that's where they'd probably raise an action, more chance of success there as well.
Signs of things to come I reckon - ministry signs contract with two individuals, they make a go of the business, ministry thinks "we can do that" and goes to court to effectively renege on the deal. The judiciary are all in the pocket of the AKP so pretty much foregone conclusion the ministry would win.
A pretty disgusting double cross by civil servants who couldn't run to the toilet never mind run a bar and restaurant.
Suspect it'll end up back on the market for offers to lease...

But for now, stripped, destroyed and empty right in the middle of the tourist season.
-
Turkonomics in action again.
-
Yep, and the worst thing about it is that the civil servants don't give a feck. In fact, the even worse worst thing is that they don't give a feck about the dozens of folks who lost their jobs.

The sunbeds look to be back again. Strange or what.
-
looking at the webcam. Looks the same as usual.
-
Some kind of coloured envelope to the correct address maybe?
-
Nothing surprises me in Turkey any more, especially where the current government (or its officials) are concerned.
More likely a "governmental partnership with a (shoebox) profit sharing scheme attached" :)

All sunbeds back this morning and very busy.
The only things missing were three overcharging beach bars !!!
-
I’ve learn’t in life that there were always two sides to every story, but the advent of Facebook means that nowadays there are always three ( and there’s four if you include rumour and gossip).
This case is typical.
What we DO know is that there was a court case and the operators of the beach lost the case.
We will never get the municipality side of the story
However, should we be asking Where the Operators in breach of the terms of their Lease ? Did they even have a lease ? Had they paid all the rent instalments on time ? Where the bars allowed under the Terms of the Lease ?? Had they failed to carry our maintenance according to the terms of the Lease. ? Had they already been issued with warnings ?
Let's face it, the operators are not going to admit any failings.
There could be loads of perfectly valid reasons why they were booted off. But they are all boring and not very interesting.
Believing that there are dark forces at work is much more fun !
-
Maybe boring and interesting to you.. The workers have families to feed.. and lots of tourists dissapointed but you can have a laugh about it.
-
mercury - I have to say that when I read phil's contribution I dd not think that he was having a laugh, more that he was putting forward an alternative view.
-
Rumour has it... ;)
That the company that has the new cable car operation is also going to get the contract for the beach.
-
That's what it says in the Fethiye Times this week.
-

And herein lies another problem.... two dimensional posts – you see the words but your don’t see the face.
Some may have read my words and seen a quizzical old fart just raising a few points that hadn’t been asked before.
Some may have seen a smart arse sniggering and having a laugh seemingly at the expense of others.
I’ll let you decide which one I was.
PS : It remains entirely possible that workers lost their jobs and the tourists were inconvenienced as the result of the failings of the operators.....
-
Maybe I over reacted but I do have friends there trying to make a living..
