On one of our trips we spent a night in the town of Egidir on the lake of the same name. One of the town's claims to fame is that it has the only minaret in Turkey that is built over a road (above). I thought this rather surprising and it vaguely reminded me of somewhere else. It took me a while to remember where. Then I twigged. It was rather close to home. St John the Baptist church built into the old city wall with a spire above one of the city gates (below).
