Well this appointment came as a big surprise.......had no idea.

So how long will he last if results do not improve markedly?

Got something to prove then according to The Guardian today:

The subsequent years have been good, if not as luminous. It is worth noting that Van Gaal, widely proclaimed serial winner, has won two league titles and the German DFB-Pokal Cup in the last 15 rather staccato years, taking in his disorientating, aborted succession to Alex Ferguson in 2002, a difficult second spell at Barcelona and periods with the Dutch national team.

In my humble opnion Van Gaal is one of the best coaches in the world, able to create a tight team that performs way better than the sum of the individual players. Give him time and ManUtd will truly dominate the world of football with fantastic football. As Liverpool-fan, my greatest fear.

As a Liverpool fan I think we are doing fine, so I am not concerned about M.C. and it will take a few years to build M.U. again and remember this guy never stays very long at any club, also he is not like Fergie starting off in his forties and staying for over 20 years.  He is already 63.  I think the plan may be to keep him for a few years and pass the mantle to Giggs.

John - as of now both you and VG look pretty good :-)
Great performance and your "sum of the parts etc" was spot on.

Thanks Ian. It was a good result against a Spanish team that totally lost it during half-time. I wonder what tea they got served...
