Title: Uzumlu - Putting the Record Straight
Post by: LisaJ on November 02, 2014, 05:34:31 AM
Despite opinions to the contrary (usually repeatedly voiced by the same people on CBF) Uzumlu is a beautiful and friendly place to live, - the vast majority living here keep themselves to themselves, get on with life and enjoy their surroundings and are not, nor wish to be involved, in the supposed feud perpetrated by individuals who do not live in Turkey, let alone Uzumlu.   It is truly sad that every time something comes up about Uzumlu (whether positive or negative) there is a general "jumping on the bandwagon" to taint and quite frankly "slag off" the entire village.   For almost all of us that enjoy life in Uzumlu there is no "us and them" we merely exercise our right to socialise with whoever and wherever we wish - much like the residents of Calis, Fethiye, Hisaronu etc., we enjoy a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars and the company of a diverse cosmopolitan mix of people who do, believe it or not, actually, get along with one another.

It is apparent that certain people enjoy fuelling controversy, fanning the fire and winding up others for their own entertainment, however, most of us are fed up to the back teeth with those that sit in their ivory towers continually berating Uzumlu - we love this little piece of Turkey as many of you love your little piece of Fethiye and if you haven't got anything nice, good, constructive or useful to say do us all a favour and keep your opinions to yourself!!

Well said Lisa.  Hit nail on head.  Thank you!!!!!  -Sadly this judgemental attitude has existed against Uzumlu for years and I used to get in many rows back in the "Cement Works Days".  I came out of it battle scarred and realising its just not worth it, there are some people who are very smug and enjoy finger pointing.  Sod them, they deal in half truths and and sweeping generalisations and life's too short (for me) to bother with them, because they like tarring us with a brush we don't deserve and they wont change.

What does "apophasis" mean please. Or do you mean HYPOTHESIS?

I know people (including you Rindaloo) who love Uzumlu greatly and don't get involved in the local politics and witch hunts. I even understand why people might love Uzumlu. It isn't/wasn't for me. I assume I am one of those mentioned making generalisations from ivory towers (well the cap fits so I'm wearing it    ;) )

My point was that having been the administrator of CBF for 11 years, there appears to be a disproportionate amount of back stabbing, gossiping, name calling and incidents for the size of the place/number of expats, compared to all other local areas where British folk have settled.

I stand by that.

Not sure where to start here apart from heading this as "The Last Post" (background sound of bugler in Peter Sellers version of the ballad of Gunga Din www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldGjixoV4xs ).

Have read with mounting horror the pages of comments on the "Eddie (aka Seckin) incident" where initially village expats and latterly non-village expats have managed to reduce the reputation of a whole community from being a friendly welcoming oasis to somewhere no one in their right mind would dream of visiting let alone living in.  A big sarcastic "well done" to some of the  contributors, especially those who have enthusiastically jumped on the bandwagon in the last couple of days.

Along with many others we chose to move up to Uzumlu 8 years ago because we didn't feel at home in the urban surroundings of Ovacik. As with most villages it's difficult not to get involved in social and community events in some way, but over a period of time one learns who and what you want to involved with. Most people understand this dynamic, but there are those that don't get it and overtime have tried to "take over" and obviously believe that their views are those that must prevail.

Before the arrival of social media (I include CBF) this would not be a problem, but these local issues become a focus for the ghoulish voyeurs that in past times would have enjoyed a good hanging or car crash. I don't blame people for reading it, but I do take issue with those who believe that these things can be resolved in such a forum.
Someone commented that nothing like this happens in Calis, Ovacik etc. Of course it does but no body is daft enough to blow it up out of all proportion. To paraphrase a previous comment "come on Uzumulians get a grip".

Over and definitely out.

For a definition of apophasis go to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apophasis

and, no, it's got nothing to do with hypothesis.

(I'll admit I had heard the word before but had to Google it for it's true meaning.)

I wouldn't call it a minor incident, beaten senseless on your way home from the pub

Sounds like the ideal village to buy a place, have a lovely peaceful life with a great community spirit and some lovely bars to have a drink in the evening.      ;) :P :-X
Must say the locals really are doing a great job of publicising the merits of the village  ;)

And why wouldn't they, it is beautiful. Its just a crying shame that a very tiny ratio of ex pats appear to be bad apples and seem to take pleasure in stirring things up in a public forum.
