A couple of days ago I called into a pub at lunchtime to sit out in the garden and enjoy the dregs of the summer sun. On the jukebox was a song that, for me, encaptulates the essence of summer. I'm not sure why; the lyrics aren't really that good - perhaps not even PC ("Have a drink, have a drive" and stuff like that). I can't recall any other record the group made; it was probably a one-hit wonder. But for some reason - perhaps a certain time and place in my life that has now been swallowed up in the sepia mists of the past - it remains my most evocative sound of the British summer.
Then I started thinking about what others would get into my Top 5. I get stuck when I couldn't get the list lower than six. Then I decided so rule out Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks only because it didn't have "summer" in its title. So. in ascending order, here are the five:
5. Those Lazy Hazy Crazy of Summer - Nat King Cole
4. Summertime - Paul Robeson
3. Summertime Blues - Eddy Cochran
2. Summer in the City - Lovin' Spoonful
And at the top of the list
1. In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry
OK, what about your list - for Britain, Turkey or anywhere else.
