My Turkish friend recommends a Turkish cheese called kasar (pr)kashar.
The more yellow it is - the more it tastes like cheddar.

And you can still buy Crackerbarrel. (I just googled it)

This topic about cheese could surpass the Efes one  :)

If you are buying it from them -what do you ask for?

Just need to ask for extra strong chedder cheese - he will know exactly what you want.

Don't be shy if it is too strong or salty or too mild - just ask to try another...

tadabilirmiyim - means can I try

daha tadabilimiyim - means can I try more

Ian will know all this  ;)

When I buy he always cuts my portion from the block that I have tasted - so it should taste the same when you get it home...

I used to buy this stuff (Kasar) before I found these people. It relatively expensive and Bim where it was cheapest stopped selling it something to do with the packaging they told me!!! There it was about 7tl for about 200 maybe 250grams. In Migros expect to pay more.

This chedder cheese at the market is approx 16tl a kilo. Half the price.

The "cow" shop(sorry don't know the real name, but you can't miss it) in Tasyaka has a good selection of cheeses, not cheap but good quality.

Our little market shop on the main Calis-Gunlusbasi road called Aydi sells Izmir Tulem cheese, she is from Izmir and says it the best cheese in Turkey, its the nearest thing to English Cheddar over here.

We use Anadolu pazar in Fethiye. It is beside the Bim shop as you approach the Migros traffic lights going in to Fethiye. They have a cheese called Bergama which is great and not at all unlike English strong cheddar.
