I couldn't really explain the subject in the title box :-\
What I mean is, players who arrived on the scene that looked like they would have a sensational career, but just didn't make it big.
To "kick off"...
Danny Cadermarteri - seemed to be the coming of something special as an Everton youngster, then just slowly faded away.
John Harley - I thought he had it all when he started at Chelsea - where is he now [:o]
Any others?
-
daniel le coko tranmere rovers

Sorry Moe but your team ripped Leeds off for him and what goes round comes round.

Peter Marinello - Was supposed to be the new George Best.
Mo Johnston
Steve Daley
Tony Yeboah
Tomas Brolin
-
In fairness Brolin was till he came to Leeds :)
Mike Marsh - how's that for a career that continually spiralled downwards...
-
:) Stan Collymore, what a tripe hound he turned out to be, ;)
-
No no no
Players who started out with great promise but didn't deliver - not players with a good reputation who failed to keep it up at a new club.
Oh bugger it, have it your way :D
-
Francis Jeffers. Great at Everton, flopped at Arsenal, and now at Sheffield Wednesday
-
stephen hughes who started his career at arsenal big things expected then sold. not sure where he's now[?]
-
What about Mark Kennedy at Liverpool?
I think he was the most expensive teenager ever when he signed but has been a "journeyman" ever since.
Saw him for a couple of years at Man City and on his day - brilliant - BUT - like lots of wingers he had too many games where he didn't fancy it.
I 've seen so many wingers who seem to be beaten before the game kicks off because they don't fancy themselves against the full back - it just makes you realise how much confidence makes in the mix.
Ian :)

Jody Morris [:o]
-
jose reyes..! till he left his shins on garry neville's boots in the big 50 game..!

Jimmy Muir, what a player he was. Came from nowhere into the Sheff United side and scord the winner in the final. Never head from him since.

I love that about the British. A player turns on a six pence or shows a turn of pace and we compare them to greats. 'The new Pele...Best...Moore...

Tomas Brolin - I forgot about him!!
In Euro 92, England fell to a superb goal from a hugely promising young Swedish striker. Eight years on, the scorer, now a vacuum-cleaner salesman based in Stockholm, could only reflect on a career which went grindingly wrong. Tomas Brolin at his peak was graceful, skillful and captivating. Past it, he was one of the most limited players in world football. The decline set in soon after Euro 92, but apparently went unnoticed by then Leeds boss George Graham, who paid Parma £4.5m for him in 1995. When Brolin arrived looking like Keith Chegwin's tubby twin, Graham was panic-stricken. Brolin made just 19 appearances in two years before his career collapsed amidst a series of training ground walk-outs and dietary rumours. Leeds paid out the remainder of his contract. He returned to England for a final Premiership fling at Crystal Palace in 1998, but, after 13 appearances, was deemed too fat to play, and made assistant manager to Attilio Lombardo when Steve Coppell was moved aside. Palace were instantly relegated - Brolin hasn't been seen in this country since.
He opend the Ikea in Leeds though so he did something for the city (I think).

Paul McStay of Celtic
Club Appearances 678 Goals 72 in a mediocre league defensively
Scotland Appearances 76 Goals 9
-
Tommy Caton
He made his debut for City aged 16, and became a regular in the City side, playing in the 1981 FA Cup final, when still only 18 years old.
Sadly , he died at the age of 30, never having fully fulfilled his early potential.
-
Wot about Tommy Graveson, Real Madrid, Celtic,( blue chip signing they claimed at parkhead) loan out to Everton reserves, back to Celtic reserves soon for his £35000 a week, what a hoot!!!
-
Keith, how can you mention Jody Morris,a player at his peak now playing for a top team.
St Johnstone : :)
-
My point exactly Ronaldo :D
Which brings me onto something related that I was actually thinking about today.
I remember watching A Scottish League Cup final on Sky a few years back, only because the mighty St. Johnstone were playing Rangers. There was a St. Johnstone player called George O'Boyle who was simply sensational for the whole game. I recall thinking that he wouldn't be there very long and would be heading to Celtic, Rangers or a Premiership club - yes, all based on what I saw in 90 minutes but it was a fantastic 90 minutes.
Thinking of this topic today, I wondered what happened to Mr. O'Boyle. Resaearch shows he was caught by St. Johnstone staff taking cocaine in a nightclub toilet at the Christmas party and was sacked. From there he fell deeper into the Scottish league with short stays and no more than a handful of appearances at the likes of Brechin and Queen of the South, before returning to his native Northern Ireland with Glenavon. From there his career plummeted even further in minor leagues.
A tragic waste of an unmistakable great talent.

Didn't he become Boy George?
Tinx ;)

Ah, he wore a frock and was in the A team! :)

After taking the wee wee out of Jody Morris only yesterday ,last night he apparently played a blinder for St Johnstone in beating St Mirren in the quarter final of the Scottish cup.

It would have been more in line with his original potential if he'd have played a blinder in the Champions league or something similar for Chelski in the Premiership.

I did a search to find this topic again - on the subject of players who burst onto the scene then faded down the leagues and gone - after reading that one time Aston Villa's young sensation Lee Hendrie is without a club now after being released by Derby - training with Reading hoping to be offered something.
-
Biscuit?
-
Anton Ferdinand. Does he count? Still at Blunderland but they did want rid. No takers evidently.
-
Brian Clough. Most of his goals were scored in the old second division and he got crocked before he had a real chance to shine in the first.

Yes Keith he was on soccer am on Saturday, I found that a strange outcome for such a quality young player, Helen Chamberlin phoned the Torquay manager live on air to get him a trial/game :o ;)

Tom
Players who came in at the top and faded away. I think your suggestion is exactly the opposite to that :D
-
With respect Keith, the caption was " Players Who Had a Huge Future - Then Didn't". With his scoring record behind him, Brian could have had a huge future in the first division if he hadn't had his serious injury.
-
Ok Tom you are technically correct :)
-
Vinny Samways :D
-
I saw Vinny Samways in Las Palmas! Not many British players end up playing there :)

Gary Birtles, Liam Millar, Kleberson!

That appears to be a dig at Sir Alex (the last two) - so why not chuck in Eric Djemba Djemba, Veron, Silvestre, Roy Carroll, Poborsky, Prunier (remember him??!!), and the goalkeepers who's careers he ruined by making them scared to death of making a mistake - Taibi, Bosnich...
But on the other hand - forgetting the self reared stars like Scholes, Giggs, Beckham etc - some amazing (and cheap) signings like Stam, Evra and Solskjaer. But nothing ever will come close to the greatest signing of all time - £530,000 for Peter Schmeical. Even Arsene Wenger can't beat that.
-
Irwin from my team Oldham was a close second!!!!!
-
Evra and Vidic had a nightmare first six months, I remember Alan ' I hate Utd' Green.' Saying on the radio that Fergie had lost the plot as these two were terrible buys! I have to disagree with Veron and Silvestre. Veron should have stayed another year and Silvestre, although not a superstar was a very reliable defender for us.
Irwin was also a fantastic buy for Utd, I remember Schmeical's debut, he just looked HUGE compared to poor old Jim Leighton. Owen is the latest cheap buy, that goal against City last season was worth a years wages, his not mine.
