just a long shot but I am taking thyroxine for an underactive thyroid - can I buy this over the counter in Turkey and is it an expensive item?

You can buy over the counter. Luckily it is one of the cheaper medications. Less than cost of prescription here. Got a feeling it was somewhere in the region of £2 for 30 tabs of 100mcg - but please don't hold me to that. Your longshot paid off.

If you plan to retire here you can register with the Esnaf hospital in Fethiye (Possibly other hospitals as well) It is free to register, simply put all your details on their computer and you are given a card with your registration number. If you then require medical treatment any drugs are dispensed at a reduced cost i.e.the same as a Turkish national. You do need a residency visa to obtain this concession. :)

Thanks for all your replies - most helpful web site I've come across. Can't wait to get my house on the market and move to Turkey.
:D
