Turkish 'double glazing is the absolute pits, doesn't keep out noise

Standard double glazing with 6/12 mm gaps between panes is designed for insulation any noise reduction is a by product. You need a gap of at least 225 mm between the panes of glass for effective noise reduction

I used to have the main London to Birmingham railway line at the bottom of my garden  

On the telly the Everest man closes a window and all the noise disappears. They didn't appear to be 9" thick

When I lived at home, even nearer Heathrow that I do now (!!) we had secondary glazing put in, paid for by the airport when they opened up a new terminal.  It's easily got 9" between the glass but it was a complete 'inner' set of windows rather than double glazing.  It was brilliantly effective.  Looks very dated now but dad and most of the people in the area don't want it replaced by double glazing because the secondary glazing is so much better.
