Title: Guvec
Post by: heather07 on October 19, 2008, 20:44:25 PM
I love this dish when I visit Turkey.
Does anybody know what spices are used?
On my recent visit I had trouble finding Guvec on a menu in Hisaronu and the one I did find was not the best I have had.

I have written on here that I was disappointed in the swordfish that I had in Mangals but their Guvec is one of the best I have tasted.

I think White Man in Hisaronu does GuveƧ.  It's at the other end of the road near Olive Tree.

We were in the olive tree and they didn't have it, should have gone to the White Man.
I was hoping for a fix before next year.  I have had spices made up in Fethiye and made it myself but don't know what the spices were.

Guvec refers to the crock pot that is used for cooking not the actual dish itself.  Hence you can have lamb Guvec, vegetable Guvec etc. :)

It is the chicken one I have.
I am sure Mangal also called it Turkish Goulash.

Ah, so the mystical spices appear to be salt and pepper. There is a shop in Perth where you can buy both of those Heather, I'm sure I've seen them on sale :D

Try bunging some meat onions peppers tomatoes and the spices into a casserole and see what it cooks up like.  Maybe fry it up before you put the spices in.  I have used the spices from the market and it certainly gives a twist to a normal casserole.  Sometimes I do this in the slow cooker, just remember not to add extra fluid for the slow cooker.

Garlic a spice Heather? No, garlic is a species in the onion family Alliaceae. Its close relatives include the onion, the shallot, the leek and the chive, although they only get together for weddings and funerals.

The bell peppers are exactly the same as those available in the UK, Heather. I can't believe I'm in the recipe section  ;)

Rindaloo that was what I did when I got the spices from a shop in Fethiye a couple of years ago.  The following year the shop had closed and I got meat spices from the market but it wasn't the same.

I can relate to your cooking terms.

Yes that could be a distraction.
The Craigie chippy never ceases to amaze me.  It is consistent in quality and watching how that guy remembers everyones order is an excellent way to pass the time.
