UK Car Insurance
« on: October 17, 2013, 11:49:09 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I would be grateful for advise regarding car insurance back in the UK.

I am returning to England next week, having been in Turkey since 2005. I recently contacted my old insurance company, who are now part of Esure, and was basically told to bugger off!!

I was told they would not even quote me until until I had lived back there for 3 years!!!

It would appear that driving, accident free, for over 7 years in Turkey is going to count for nothing, and based on what I was told by Esure, I can't get insurance anyway!

I can't believe this is the case? Has anyone else had the experience of returning to the UK and insuring a car, and if so I would very much appreciate advise on how to go about it.

Many thanks,

Gordon

why not try a uk comparison site, put your details in and they will tell you if they will cover you a good one is the link  below

As above try all the comparison sites, when we returned to the UK we had to start from scratch regarding the discounts, all companies refused to recognise Turkish insurance.  Also remember loyalty means nothing with insurance companies, use the comparison sites every year for better discounts.

I agree with Loz but would also mention some that are worth looking at that don't appear on comparison site and they are Churchill, Admiral and Direct Line who are all the same company but the quotes vary from company to company.

A bit painful keep filling in the same details but I got some good deals on a number of vehicles from a combination of the above.

Good luck with the search  ;)

Not much use to you Gordon, but may help some of those people considering coming to live in Turkey for some time.  When we came over we had our no claims protected/frozen by our existing car insurance company, who said/confirmed that they would apply the no claims discount when we returned to the UK.  This was with Privilege, which is I believe part of the Direct Line group.

No doubt, like all insurance companies, in my experience  they will try to weazle out of that commitment in the future or try to apply some additional charging, but for now I am 'reasonably' confident that they will honour it. : :)

I got a hell of a shock with my new insurance quote... Anything between 850 and 1400 pounds... Finally got used my sons company and it was quite a relief to pay 550 pounds.. I knew it would be expensive but hells bells!!! I am assured that it will be a lot less next year.

Many thanks to everyone for the replies. Sounds like there is no good news then!LOL

I can only assume they think that we will have learnt to drive like the Turks during our time here!LOL

My next problem is that in my limited experience of comparison sites, and quite possibly when speaking directly to insurance companies, I think I am right in saying that the first thing they ask is for the car registration number? I don't yet have a car, and obviously any decision as which car to buy will be influenced to a certain extent by the cost of insurance. So is it still possible to get a quote just by make and model etc??

I suspect that can't be done on the comparison sites?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it.

Regards

Gordon

If you know which car you want and see one on the road to get a quote input that,  that is how I got round it, somewhere on the form it does ask if you have yet purchased or own the car, as you are just getting quotes not harm is done,  The one thing I did learn when we returned after nearly 6 years was to open another email account, use this for comparing, it is for the rubbish that you will get.
