Whats the feeling locally regarding the referendum?
« on: March 22, 2017, 12:56:22 PM »
I'm curious, what are folks saying locally about the upcoming referendum, bearing in mind that Fethiye has never been what you could describe as an AKP stronghold?

I know that there is virtually a media blackout for anyone or any organisation who dares to be a "naysayer" as some articles describes those who want a No vote to prevail, but what are folks saying about it, if they're even mentioning it at all!

Things are a bit tense in Istanbul if you're not following the (AK) party line, any campaigning for a No vote tends to result in violence and mob action.

If you are going to quote anyone, please don't make them identifiable   :)

We sat next to a small group of no campaigners having pancakes at the sunday market.
People were coming over & shaking their hands.
There was also a guy from the communist party giving out no leaflets.
Quite a large group gathered a few days ago in the main square and all fine.
Saw 2 evet minibuses parked on the side of the road.
People here dont tend to talk politics but a few Turks Ive spoken to are worried that its going to be bad news whatever the outcome.

That is one brave chappie.  Try that in many parts of Istanbul and just a severe beating would probably be his best outcome.

I have been surprised by some who have said they will be voting yes.  In the main I think Fethiye sways way more to a no vote.  But a good number I have spoken to are afraid to air their views.
