I could kill for a plate of these!
« on: August 09, 2018, 08:03:07 AM »
Ok, maybe not right now, it's a bit early!

I haven't been to Istanbul for ages and one thing I really miss is the food, cheap street food especially.  The Spanish (in my neck of the woods) don't really do "street food" as such, they have a much more relaxed culture and the concept of grabbing something to eat on the go is pretty alien.  Kebab shops and cheap pizza joints here all have tables and it's unusual to see anyone eating in the street.  That said, their kebabs are disgusting and out of seven or eight pizza places we've only found one worth using.

The larger cities are a bit different, but it's not easy to travel an hour up the road to Sevilla when you fancy a döner dürüm or pide at one o'clock in the morning!

Feast your eyes and enjoy...

John, this dish looks so appetising. Is it available in Calis/Fethiye? I'll be back in Calis in September for a couple of weeks and I would like to try it.    :)

It's called içli köfte and yes, it is available in Fethiye.  Best I can remember is Paşa Kebab.

Definitely worth an evening out at Pasa Kebab !

You can also get these on the deli counter at supermarkets, and a slightly lower quality version in the freezer section.

Think they do it at the Kebab place/soup kitchen at the dolphinless roundabout.

John - we have now bought - 6 months ago - in a small and very pretty town called Pinoso ( 50 km inland from Alicante). Everything about the town is lovely but the lack of “fast food on the go” is the same.
We have some lovely restaurants that do homemade Pizzas but only 2 Pizza take aways and one kebab shop - and they only open Thurs / Fri and Sat evenings 😀 We do have a Michelin star rated restaurant- rated for its paella with snails - at €30 a plate - so I will be giving that a miss 😀.
You are so right about the “relaxed culture” - it takes a bit of getting used to!

On the plus side - the Menu del Dia at our local (150 yds away) is €9.50 for 3 courses inc a drink and a coffee and it is good food, well presented and the place has a real buzz every afternoon.

We are driving over to Spain again and have booked a week in Portugal in the middle of our 6 week trip - so we are staying a couple of nights in Osuna (supposedly where some of Game of Thrones was filmed) en route to Lagos so we will give you a wave as we pass you 👍
