Coronavirus - A Local Issue
« on: March 05, 2020, 21:10:53 PM »
There was an interesting article in our local newspaper today on an issue which I hadn’t really considered before now.

Invergordon, 10 miles North of us will soon be welcoming the first cruise ship of the season.

Passengers disembark and travel on public transport to various parts of the area including of course Inverness.

This business has been built up over a number of years and this season they expect 103 ships and a total of some 178,000 passengers from various parts of the world.

I am not one for scaremongering but it is something to think about especially since Mrs H is in one of the vulnerable groups.

Great for the economy but not so good when things like Coronavirus rears it’s ugly head.  There is no accountability regarding people’s travel arrangements which makes containment almost impossible.

Not so Ray1951 - the Port Authority have plans in place which will hopefully be effective.

I'm not too concerned for myself John but like Brenda my Mum would definitely be at risk.
All we can do is heed all advise given and hope for the best.
Do you know what plans the Port Authority has in place?

Yes.

All ships must complete Arrival Declaration Form. This must state if any passenger or crew member is suffering from symptoms or as travelled from, visited or transited via known areas affected by Coronavirus.

The Port Authority will examine the Form and only if satisfied  will they give the go ahead for the ship to enter the port.

If a ship declares there are symptoms it will be held outside the Cromarty Firth limits to allow assessment of the situation and quarantine if necessary.

Sounds a bit like the form for entering Turkey.
Hopefully people will be truthful when entering their data

Indeed so Anne.

I would have to hope that it's in cruise operators interest to ensure that the crew and especially the medical staff remain vigilant if for no other reason than to avoid any bad publicity

I’m going on a cruise in June and have had a detailed email from P&O with regard to the steps they are taking. There will be checks before boarding and anyone who has been to China in the 2 weeks prior to the cruise will not be allowed to board including staff. Also anyone having been or travelled through a high risk area will have an enhanced health check. I should imagine that there will be changes before we go due to the situation but at the moment I’m not too worried.

Just had another email saying that we can cancel up to 48 hrs before we sail and transfer to a different cruise next year if we want. If we wish to carry on with the holiday we will receive £200 on board credit. Well done P&O can relax a bit now.
