Karen,

Yes, wood for odd jobs is readily available, although it's mainly rough sawn i.e. not smooth. It's much cheaper than the UK, but you have to bear in mind that a) it's not seasoned and b) it's stored outdoors.

I do a lot of carpentry and have to make sure that the wood that I want to use is bought well in advance and then left to season under cover for a few weeks.

On the other hand bricks and mortar are also cheap so you've got plenty of choice.

Hi KKOB
Have you found power tools to be cheap in turkey as well by any chance?

I actually shipped my entire workshop out from the UK. I've not had any experience of buying new power tools over here yet. There are the usual well known brand names that you find in the UK, Black & Decker, De Walt, Bosch, Stihl etc. However you have to be careful of the number of fakes and lookalikes. The prices are not that far removed from those in the UK but you'll find that stock is limited and, like many things, many items have to be ordered from either Ankara, Izmir or Istanbul.

We shipped about 2 tonnes of tools and the entire contents of a 400 year old, 4 bedroomed cottage, full of antiques. We didn't bring a TV, washing machine, DVD, dishwasher, beds etc. We declared everything that we brought with us which included all of my powertools, 3 Dysons, a food processor, a microwave/multicooker and several other small electrical items. The total duty was £1,700.

No, I don't think there are any Dyson agents. What are you trying to get?
