Hands up from me - yes I will admit that I had assumed that this was going to be an obituary post

Happy that it isn't  :)

Great news! Daughters MIL was around for a visit the weekend. She was telling me that her twin sister was one of the original diddy men in panto. She was too tall, so wasn't able to be one. She couldn't speak highly enough of Ken dodd, how he bought all the younger cast a present of a doll or suchlike, paid for their after party and attended it and gave them extra money. Such a lovely fella. Unlike Morecambe n wise who were very nice at all. That surprised me. Thought they would have been. So glad he has recovered.

Good news, I must confess my first reaction was as Highlanders.
With KD you go for an enjoyable evenings entertainment and literally lucky if you can escape before midnight.
The stamina of the man is unbelievable. Long may he continue.

And he's stayed at the top of his game without the need to resort to foulmouthed language and smut.

There's a lesson there for today's generation of  " comics ", most of who will be forgotten a few years from now.      ;)

Years ago I took our two young daughters to see Ken Dodd and his Diddymen. Expecting a show just for the kids I, and the rest of the adults in the audience, were  royally entertained the whole afternoon. He had the entire audience  in stitches. He has the ability to entertain all ages without resorting to smutty jokes or being patronising to the kids. Keep going Doddy! As kevin said, many of todays 'entertainers' could learn a lot from him.

I must admit I was unsure of Ken until we went to see him. He was just great, much as others have mentioned; tireless on stage, clean humour, long long show well past midnight, and brought with him a legion of fans. If he continues we will definitely go again, just so I don't have to contribute to another thread on acts I regret not seeing for a second time.

Any news on his dad’s dog

Some years ago Ken Dodd was being interviewed and he gave his thoughts on "comedy".

He said that he loved the "clash" that occurred between real life and the absurd.

He had, he says, written a poem that by the very nature of its title caused such a "clash".

He entitled his poem " A sailor's farewell to his horse".

Any news on his dad’s dog

I took a text from Tim today

And saw it sadly said,

“It’s hard for me to say to you

But Ken Dodd's dad’s dog’s dead”.

I tried to text him back again

And not delete the thread

But clumsily I lost his text

Of “Ken Dodd’s dad’s dog’s dead”.

I put Sky News on to confirm

And saw the strapline read,

“Breaking news from Knotty Ash –

Ken Dodd's dad’s dog’s dead”.

And when I bought a Daily Star

It seemed from' A to Z

That all the paper had to say

Was Ken Dodd's dad’s dog’s dead.

This tortuous tongue-twister

Was doing in my head

But there’s no way I could forget

“Ken Dodd's dad’s dog’s dead”.

The flags half mast on Lime Street;

The city’s painted red,

And blue, of course, for Everton

Cos Ken Dodd's dad’s dog’s dead.

Did Ken Dodds dad’s dog die today?

His kennel’s now a shed

He’ll never need his old dog lead

Cos Ken Dodd's dad’s dog’s dead.

Yes, Doddy’s dad’s dog dud alright

His fleas to Jesus fled

The mangy hound has gone to ground

Cos Ken Dodd’s dad’s dog’s dead.

Since it was about a dog maybe he thought it was an anagram of Enjoy Pooch.
