When it asks which currency to charge you in, there’s only one right answer…

Good advice.
On same thread, does anyone know if you are charged for withdrawing "foreign " currency from atm machines in Turkey, for example there are some that say you can withdraw, pounds, euros etc, if you use a UK bank card to withdraw pounds, is there a charge?
-
I think it depends on who you bank with in the UK and what type of account you have. Some charge even for drawing sterling abroad and others take a fee for using ATM, some do not charge at all.

I have never paid a charge for withdrawing sterling (every month) at HSBC in the 6 years I have been here.

Who is your account with? If I withdraw sterling at HSBC with my UK HSBC Debit Card I am charged a percentage and a withdrawal fee. On the other hand if I withdraw sterling with my Nationwide Debit Card there are no charges.

I've been drawing sterling from HSBC ATM's in Turkey for the last ten years. Using a barclays debit card I've never been charged any commission/handling fees.

I always draw sterling from the HSBC cash points and then change locally, never been charged any fee or commusson, we have HSBC advance account.

I have a nationwide debit card. Next time I am back I will withdraw sterling with it and see if I am charged. If there is no charge, then it is much better to withdraw sterling & change it myself rather than paying the commission and withdrawal fee. Thanks for the info.

Lorraine, if your Nationwide account is a Flex account then you won't be charged to withdraw sterling in Turkey.

I tried withdrawing Sterling at HSBC in Fethiye, with my Halifax card they charged me £1.50 with Santander card no charge. I also used the TEB by the Otogar and no charge using Santander there for Sterling withdrawal. Slightly off topic but I thought some advice from a friend is worth sharing, he said always try and use an ATM at a bank during opening hours as an armed guard near by tends to deter scammers etc.

On the otherhand, I was always told that you should never trust a man who keeps one hand on his weapon. ;)
