Hi - our front door - standard brown metal door - is directly in the sun most of the day and has a white (ish) coating.
I have tried covering / cleaning it with WD40 and although it looks fine for a day or two it quickly loses it appearance.
Any ideas?
Ian :(

If you can get hold of whatever T-cut might be over there it would be my next option. Cay-cut maybe ;)
-
If you give it a good wash then once dry rub baby oil in to it and buff, it comes up pretty good. Will need repeating, of course, but not every 5 mins :)

This is a topic about doors Lynne

Thanks - will give that a go - I would replace it but I think the same thing will happen and the white sort of tide mark finish doesn't please her indoors :-)

What you could do is get it covered with a wood veneer. This way when it fades it looks reasonable and you only have to recoat onece or twicw a year.
Looks good to.

Well I thought it was funny Keith. lol. x

Me too, lol.

Hi We had the same problem and baby oil works a treat.
-
I don't like to talk too soon - but Lynne might just be a star :) :)
I did a small patch yesterday with an oil that is my wife's Turkish equivalent of double base cream that we got from the chemist in Fethiye - it is like baby oil but cheaper!!!!
This morning is looks good!!!
I foolishly rubbed my hand across it and it picked up marks from my hand as the sun had been on it for a couple of hours and it was hot - but it had brought the original pattern / grain back on the metal.
So I will wait until it is cooler - give it good wash in soap and water and then let it dry and wipe the whole area down with the oil.
Isn't it just amazing what you pick up on this forum :D :D
-
Ian, what is the name of the oil?
-
Oooh this is great to hear Ian, my door has the same look to it so I am going to try this on mine, I too would like to know the name of the stuff your wife buys in Turkey, thanks in advance :)
-
She uses it on all her doors and it works a treat. She told me it is also particularly good on her knockers.
-
he he ;)
-
oo er ;D
-
We got it from the eczane opposite Migros in the town centre - it is called Balmandol - it has 225ml and its real use (she tells me) is for dry skin not knockers :)
I priced up Baby Oil and it was 11.45 TL for about 100 ml so this is much better value ;D
Alternatively bring some cheap baby oil with you in your hold luggage 8)
-
Thanks for that Ian.
-
Luckily I had some baby oil left here by a visitor, and my knockers have never looked better.
-
Has Dave tried it on his knob?
-
:o :o :-[ ;D
-
would the lotion be suitable for knobs and knockers as well as the door, mine are looking a little jaded so will probably give them a quick rub as well so long as it does not discolour them ;D thanks for the name of the lotion Ian :)
-
Dave took a keen interest in beautifying the knob, but I didn't have THAT much oil ;)
-
So the knockers had no chance Rindy??? ;)
-
It has worked :)
Will be off on my bike down around the sanayi tomorrow to look for a new handle and a new knocker (with spy hole) - very pleased - thanks Lynne ;D
-
YW Ian, I got the info off the net, but can't remember where. I tried it on a bad bit, thinking it wouldn't work, but it did and lasts a fair while too. :)
-
talking of all things doors knobs and knockers :)does anyone know if you can buy a replacement security catch for the standard brown metal doors please? When we use to have our apartment like fort knox the front door was locked with the security catch on, I went out and forgot about the catch when I opened the front door the catch snapped have not gotten round to replacing it but think I should really, thanks for any replies :)
-
Did the same with the catch on my door a few years ago and managed to get replacement in the Yappi market. Worth trying or if not the big DIY place on the way into Fethiye might well have them they seem to carry a huge stock of different items
-
The big DIY shop on the way into Fethiye does have them, bought one there this year.
-
So went riding around this morning - tried the big DIY on the way into Fethiye and they had brushed chrome handle for 9.90 TL - but no matching knocker.
Went around sanayi - called in a few other DIY shops with no result.
Started to ride down Gunlukbasi Road from Otogar towards Calis and past a specialist door shop (just after Kipa - I think) on the right hand side and bought handle and matching knocker in gold for 10 TL + 5 TL = 15 TL (5 TL for a spy hole but I said "no thank you - I have one ;D )
The products are not as heavy as those that I removed but they should certainly look ok for 2 or 3 years I would think and the door now looks lovely :)
-
thanks for replies it is on my to do list for October to replace my catch :)
