Title: The charter companies are really taking the p1ss this year
Post by: JohnF on February 17, 2017, 11:18:12 AM
I don't do charters.  Haven't been on one for years - THY and Easyjet for me when travelling to Turkey, although EJ's one o'clock in the morning arrival at Edinburgh pushes them almost into charter territory...

That said, the majority of seasonal visitors to Turkey arrive by way of charter airlines and it seems that this year the cost of flights has pretty much gone through the roof.  A lot of regular visitor I know in the UK have been moaning about it and also a few on here have not been happy with current prices.

The charter operators might argue that there is less demand and this pushes up prices (some destinations with fewer flights are often more expensive than busier ones) but that one doesn't wash because even though they've cut the capacity on most Turkish routes this season, its still a popular destination.

They also might argue that the weak pound against the dollar has pushed up prices as they have to buy aviation fuel in dollars - sorry guys, that one's a non starter as well.  The scheduled companies have to do the same and there hasn't been the same increases charter customers are seeing.

If you ask a representative of the charter companies I'm sure they could come up with a dozen other reasons why the price increases are (in their eyes) justified.

What they probably wouldn't be so keen to tell you is that the Turkish governments Tourism subsidy of $6,000 per scheduled (with a small "s" ) charter flight has been extended to the end of this year.  This is charter companies only, THY, EJ and Jet2 don't receive this - I must admit, I previously thought they did.

Not only has it been extended, if they manage to get over 150 bodies in an aircraft with a capacity of over 200, it increases by 30%!  You can guarantee they'll all be using their Airbus 321's and Boeing 757's on the Turkish flights this year.  Basically, if they have a three quarters full A321, they'll score about $50 per head.

The airports where this subsidy applies to are Antalya, Gazipaşa, Dalaman, Izmir, Bodrum and Kütahya.  It'll shortly be available to Denizli, Isparta and a handful of other airports, mainly in the Black Sea region.

Published in the official gazette on the 15th Feb.

Prices are a joke this year... It will certainly put off all but the owners and real die hard visitors.... It has helped us to make our minds up this year and for the first time in 10 years we will not be going..

Cant say I've done an exhaustive analysis - but does £435 flight only from Manchester late May sound like a joke?

That the total return price for 2 passengers - similar to what we have paid over the years.

Hang on - that's actually just a little less than I paid when I booked them in October!

I didn't do an exhaustive analysis either   :)  although out of curiosity I did have a look at some dates during the summer from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Manchester.  A week in June from Manchester was nearly £900 for two with hold bags and from Edinburgh (Thomsons) well over £1,000.

Same dates(ish) from Edinburgh with Easyjet were £200 cheaper.

But here's the cruncher - Edinburgh to Dalaman with THY on the same dates £206rtn. Ok, you have to change in Istanbul, but if time isn't an issue then hey ho - and it includes 23Kg and meals on board.

There are still deals to be had, but they are pretty thin on the ground...  unless you don't mind taking a bit longer and going via the 'Bul   :)

The cost of flights this year is certainly going to damage the Turkish economy, even with their subsidies the major airlines are taking the P out of everyone

The prices from a lot of uk airports to Dalaman and other way round are extorinate this year no question! I have spent a lot of time looking online for husband/ son myself and a few other folk, never seen prices like it...i was looking for a mid oct single other day Dal/LGW not school hols even and it was stupd domething like £180 per person,i have never paid that! Its a matter of principle to me thst i wont pay that and will try and be brave enough to go via Istsnbul with a stop off for a bit a lot of difference in price found one fr a similar date £68! We are fortunate we bookd early for our outwards ones when Easyjet first released theirs...

If anyone wants some cheap flights in September, THY do Edinburgh and Manchester to Dalaman (via Istanbul) for under £250rtn.  Meals and luggage included.

I'm £301rtn from Malaga, just to Istanbul :(

John you raise a good point, and I would assume it must be cheaper to run an aircraft direct to the uk than to land it in Istanbul and take off again or change aircraft which must incur more hours in labour cost, doesn't make sense does it.
I guess its just the inconvienence of time that makes it cheaper.
I've noted many airlines are offering flights at upto 30% cheaper than last year, but i haven't found any for turkey.

I looked at that too, we were looking to come out mid August for a week however the flights are £450 return per person for the dates we need. Rhodes was much cheaper £235.

Even looking at the Rhodes option things are adding up,2 flights £360,taxis app £60,2 nights in cheap hotel £110,ferry £130 = £660.Managed to find £750 return from Newcastle add on taxis = £820. So is the inconvenience worth  an £80 each saving ? Maybe look at a Marmaris package deal and not take the hotel, has anyone done this as you can get one for around £300 each.

Steve A.  I have been told that if you book a package but don't turn up at the hotel then your return flight may be cancelled.  I really don't know if this is true but feel it may be likely.

We've never done this but I'm sure I've read posts from other members who have and you just need to tell the rep when you arrive at the airport that you won't be taking the hotel. Then obviously you make your own transport arrangements to Calis and back to Dalaman for the return flight.

Needs someone who had already done this to confirm it though!  :-\

Did this a few years ago with Thomas Cooke holidays, when we arrived at Dalaman we told the rep we were not staying at the hotel as somebody we knew offered us a last minute stay in there apartment. No problems with flights (apart from a 5 hour delay coming back).

We've got friends who've done it regularly. They have their own place in Kaya but it's cheaper to book a package and then tell the rep they won't be using the hotel.

Has anyone tried this and been refused the flight home by the holiday company.

Besides which if you could manage to find a flight for 2 for £ 750 you would have to find a package holiday for £ 375 each.

How likely is that in June and/or September.

It does of course what you are paying for self catering accommodation.

Transfers to Hisaronu are no good for you H, you would end up in Hisaronu.

There is of course the "Scottish" factor.

Because there is SFA on the box and apparently the present Mrs H has a headache (a tad early to be fair) I searched package holidays in Hisaronu for our dates this year and for June and in 2018. The results are in [Pause for Effect]............

Average (first page only - I am not that bored) - 2017 - 674 per person 2018 - 527 per person.

If I cannot find a flight for either of those I am going elsewhere     :)

Package holiday still worked out dearer for us , decided to book online this morning and pay the £450 per person and to my surprise it had gone down to £376

Got the last 2 seats on the flight out,  all the other flights for the days we needed have shot up over £500 now.

Dalaman to Manchester Return Flights.

There are cheaper ones but its sods law the days I need them for they were dear. and I must admit I would rather pay more for afternoon flights, avoiding night flights, or have to get up  at stupid 'o' clock for early morning flights , much better to get the late afternoon flight Friday and get there for Friday evening. and get the early afternoon flight home.

We found Thomson flights from Edinburgh for our dates next year £361 return

So we booked Manchester flights for our dates, including 1 week 5* AI at Jiva Beach for £378

£17 well invested  ;)

That's amazing  ,  We booked at Jiva beach last year on sunshine at a really good price,  then we got a message saying the price was a mistake on the website and it should have been £800 not  £300 they then sent their small print on the contract saying they have the right to amend prices even after booking.

Yes that happened to me this year with Travel Republic and the Ece Saray. This was also hotel only. The Jiva Beach is a package holiday and no message about a misprice so far  :)

Just realized it wasn't Jiva Beach it was Letoonia where Sunshine put the wrong price online. It did look to good to be true when we found it.

I have heard of other people saying this about cheap holiday sites, you do have the option of not continuing with the booking though if my memory serves me correctly, not right though all the same.
I gave fone flight only then book accommodation separately on Alpha rooms, never had a problem with them.
Air B&B are another one I keep hearing people mention, anyone tried them yet?
