Try working this out then - i was in Meis yesterday and the Cypriot Brandy in duty free was Euro 12.65, but in the local supermarket everyone goes to - 14.70 euro for the same litre bottle?? Last time i went the same bottle in the supermarket was 18 euros. As usual all the ferry boat staff were stocking up on as much duty free stuff as they could carry.
Also ex rate for euro was 2.51 TL in Turkey or via turkish ATM, Popped into the only bank there thinking i would change an extra 50TL to euro and the guy told me the rate there was 3.39TL to the euro and a 6 euro commision charge!!!!

The tax on tobacco was supposed to be 6%. I went to buy cigarettes yesterday and found that they had gone up from 5.5 TL to 7.5 TL.

These taxes are designed to collect money - exactly as Keith describes. I would go even further in the UK and abolish Car Tax completely and put it in the price of petrol. Then those that don't pay will have to cough up or nick their petrol and those that use the road most (and cause the most wear and tear to the roads) will pay more than those who do fewer miles.

A bit too logical for this or any previous government though.

I think this is a great idea Stoop - Here is a link to set up your own on-line petition if you like. Allegedly if you get a certain number (100,000?) of people signed up the UK govt have to do something about it.

Successive governments having been toying with that idea for twenty years or more and if there was money in it, it would be in force by now.
