Turkey, Russia & Syria
« on: December 28, 2016, 10:05:03 AM »
Can we dare to hope that there is a glimmer of hope for Syrians. Ankara and Moscow say they have agreed a plan to have a Syrian ceasefire to cover the whole country. This is due to start in 12 hours time (Wednesday midnight). If successful the next move would be to hold truce talks involving Syrian government and opposition groups but not "terror organizations" (i.e. ISIS and Kurdish groups).

False start last night. Now we are promised an agreed ceasefire at midnight tonight (I assume Syrian time, Turkish time minus 1 hour).

A failure in cock-eyed optimism there John. I take it you won't be getting your atlas out to check up where Astana is located.

No need whatsoever.  Friend been working there on and off over the past year or so.  She prefers Baghdad.

I was offered a visiting post there three years ago and decided I preferred being quietly retired.

Hopefully, if Ankara and Moscow can agree to disagree about who put the deal together, there seems to be a faint glimmer,,

Reports suggest that the ceasefire is holding in most areas. Even a temporary and non-universal ceasefire is a blessing for a great many who desperately need aid from NGOs. Let's hope it keeps up a bit longer.

Russian armed forces chief has announced Russia has started removing forces from Syria in view of the success of the ceasefire. It is starting by withdrawing its aircraft carrier and some other warships.
