Title: Turkey here we come
Post by: davewalsh on April 16, 2008, 13:51:32 PM
Well, 7 more days to go and then I finish work for three months 'unpaid leave'. Marie packed in last week and she is now packing whats left of our stuff up ready for the big drive to Turkey. We will be staying at our place in Hisaronu for 8 weeks and then driving back to the UK in a four week stint stopping off at many points on the way and then I will complete a few more months at work before more than likely packing it all in. This is a bit of a pre-early retirement trial for us really. We have sold our property in the UK so, here goes. Any tips on the drive would be gratefully appreciated, we will be doing the obvious route in a UK registered saloon, with a few pots and pans and clothes as baggage. The only question I have is after Hungary, whether to go through Serbia or Bulgaria, advice on the forum seems to be a bit contrary. Any tips on the drive would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks to all for all the tips I have picked up so far from this site.

Dave, I used the Budapest,Nis, Sofia, Plovdiv, Erdirne route a couple of years ago and didn't have any problems, except that quite a few places had Visa/Mastercard signs but weren't accepting the cards because the phonelines weren't working.

Look forward to seeing you out here in a couple of weeks.

We are making this drive in October, we are also using a ferry.
From Calais, we go via Brugge, Liege, Heildelburg, Ulm, Vento and down to Ancona; halfway down Italian east coast.
We then have a 3 night ferry to Izmir (Cesme), it is then a 6 hour drive south.
We think this is a safer way to go, plus the cruise. Driving distance between Calais and Ancona approx' 1500 miles, we are doing two stops enroute.
I hope this helps. 8)

Just checked out the Ancona-Cesme ferry price for the 3rd May, which is the nearest date to our departure, cheapest available was 1070 euros, bit of a rip off. Will take the recommenmded KKOB highway. Signing off for now, will report when we get the wireless up and running at the other end. Put the kettle on Alan!

Aww!! Heather. I was hoping that this would be you moving to Turkey when I saw your name on the reply. Any progress? Or have you changed your mind about coming? Good luck Dave. Although I know that you won't need it.
