Title: Sky Channels You Can Receive With A 1.5m Dish
Post by: Scunner on April 06, 2008, 09:15:38 AM
Most people won't be wanting a 3m on their roof or in their garden here in Turkey - so won't be getting BBC1, ITV, Ch4, Ch5. A 1.5m dish is another option and doesn't look that big up on the roof.

Ok, Here is a list of channels you can receive with a sky box, sky subscription and 1.5m dish. It's a while since I used a 1.5m dish so this is as I remember, there are possibly more.

I have left out all the God, Shopping channels.

Several music channels and lots of digital radio too - most notably BBC Radio 2, Radio 4, Talksport, Virgin Radio, Capital Radio

Channels marked * are also available with no subscription, just a £20 Sky viewing card.

Sky 1, 2 (3* - possible/borderline)
UKTV Gold +1
Sky Sports 1,2,3 (assuming subscription)
Sky Movies ALL (assuming subscription)
Men & Motors* (borderline)
Hollywood TV
Channel M*
Real Madrid TV* (in English)
Wine TV*
Sky News*
CNN (Borderline)
Euro News*
Pop* (Kids)
TinyPop* (Kids)
Pop Girl (Kids)
ESPN Classic
UKTV Food
National Geographic
UKTV History
UKTV G2+1
Paramount Comedy 1
Paramount Comedy 1 +1
Paramount Comedy 2
Sci-Fi
Sci-Fi +1
UKTV Drama +1
E4 (manually tuned)
Hallmark
Biography Channel
FX
Legal TV
UKTV Style +1
Eurosport
Sky Sports News (borderline)
Bloomberg News
Fox News
TCM
Animal Planet +1
UKTV Docs +1
UKTV People
Cartoon Network
Jetix
Nick Jr

In my opinion, although you don't get BBC/ITV, there is enough in there to beat Digiturk hands down for UK programmes.

Can you subscribe to Sky out there or do you bring your current subscription and box/card with you?

Thanks for the info.We have just cancelled Sky and we are changing to BT vision. Our sky box and card will become completely redundant. At the moment we can get the basic free channels on it but is more than we can get on the Free Digi turk satellite we have in Turkey which is next to nothing of any interest. Would we need to get our dish realigned if we brought the box and card out to Turkey.

You would need a bigger dish I would guess (1.5m)

GB. If you've cancelled Sky I'm pretty sure that you'll find that your card doesn't work [:(!].

Sky cancelled and we still get the freeview channels using the card. Thought it might be worth taking the box and card to Turkey if we have the correct size dish we could at least get something a little better than Aljazeera TV!

Correct  :)

In fact, that is the whole point - with a redundant sky box and redundant card you can get Sky News, a few kids programmes and Radio 2, Radio 4 etc plus a handful of other channels which may or may not hold your interest. The vast majority you won't get but who cares? The dish will be a one off payment probably cheaper than a 'free to air' system, and you won't be stuck with Al Jazeeri TV as your best option.

Although from memory, it may be that Al Jazeeri is one of the available channels on Sky as well  :)

Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost involved having a 1.5m dish installed, and can this be used by more than 1 apartment if they have their own sky box.
thanks Mark

I'm really confused on the issue of digital t.v. in Turkey[|)][?]
Please can anyone tell me what is the best option?
Ideally would like to get sport and most english channels will have a Sky box and card to bring over, but no subscription in UK as will have to cancel here before moving over.

Any help would be most appreciated.:D

You don't have to cancel Sky when you leave the UK.

I don't really want to keep paying £45 per month for Sky, plus we will be renting our house in England, and there may be a problem if the tenants want to have Sky too!!

Well how much a month do you want to pay? If a Sky subscription isn't an option you have a choice of the few free to air channels on a Sky redundant box & card, Digiturk for around a tenner a month, or a one off payment free satellite service which is free of monthly subscription and free of channels worth even bothering with.

Sorry Scunner for being dim here, just thought it might be a problem keeping Sky and not residing in UK. Please can you tell me what channels you get with Digiturk[?]

When I was in argos last week you could get a sky package for a 1 off £75 payment. Obviously this is only the free to air channels but you get a box & I assume card as well as a dish installed.
does anyone know if this box & card will work if brought over? Maybe another option is to buy a box & card from ebay.

The only problem there is that the box has to be connected to a phone line for the first 12 months, obviously not possible if it is in Turkey. As to what they (Sky) would do if they discovered it wasn't I don't know.

What do you want to watch?
Hotbird (13e) and sirius (5e) have english language channels and no fees if you get the right box and can update the software yourself. (or get a turkish box and shops in fethiye will do it for you for a fee) + some on turksat(42e)
Currently available channels are:
Kids:
Cartoon network, disney, boomerang, jetix, cbeebies.
General:
AXN SciFi, AXN crime, BBC prime, BBC knowledge, BBC lifestyle, BBC entertainment, BBC news, tnt, cnbc-e, e2.
Films:
About 18 channels (+some adult)

There may be more, but i don't get much chance to watch tv and they're the ones i know about.

Have a word with Gary (CBF member ECHOSTAR - search in members) - he can give you a price for the dish and installation, and comes highly recommended - by me and many others.

Oh I should mention - for Sky Sports (and Sky Movies) the box and card must be the box and card paired with each other by Sky - you can watch most channels with a sky card on any box, but not these.

We are coming out to Turkey to live for a few months / years in August.Last week I had a 2 metre dish fitted on the roof, of our apartment, Keith mentioned the sky has to be connected to a phone line, my plan is for my son to have sky installed at home in the UK, with sky plus and pay an extra £10 per month for a standard box in another room, I will bring this box to Turkey, we will pay the subscription between us and I assume the the box at my sons will be connected to his phone line.We are going to have a full package so am I right in thinking I will be able to get BBC and ITV as well as all the Sky channels. Is there a better way of doing it. Any sensible suggestions will qualify for a free Efes on our new roof terrace when it is done.
Thanks
Mark

Two points here Mark:

1. The multiroom box also needs to be connected to a phone line.

2. Yes you can get BBC1 and ITV, but you'll need a bigger dish than 2m for BBC1.

Mark, I'm no expert but I thought that the 2nd box also had to be connected to a phoneline for 12 months as well! Hopefully not because you have a good scheme go otherwise.

A better plan is to find a good friend who is a longer term Sky subscriber (1 year+), offer to pay for them to upgrade to Multiroom, then take their original box. They get a nice new box that will be connected to a UK phone line, you get a perfectly good box that doesn't need to be connected to a phone line at all. Sky T&C's only need the box to be connected for the first 12 months.

Hi Mark,

Without exception as far as I know, all new boxes from Sky themselves need to be connected to the phone line for the first 12 months. After that, they don't. If you mean taking your brother's 6 month old box, it will be better than taking the new multiroom one because it gives Sky less time to catch you out. Sky+ is a good idea here anyway, as you won't be getting all channels so you can record quite a few for the "library" - i.e. record some programmes that are on when you are out or asleep for when there is nothing on worth watching.

I had a multiroom box as my first one out here - the new one delivered, not the original one. It took Sky around 5 months to realise it wasn't connected to a phone line. At this time, they contacted the friend who gave the multiroom box saying they should connect it to the phone line, or it would be billed from that point forward at normal monthly subscription rates for a single box, not just £10 a month as a multiroom 2nd box. So I ended up paying £10 to my friend for the first 5 months, and £41 per month from then on.

That all sounded a bit complicated, let me know if it wasn't totally clear!

Hi Mark
Have a look on ebay some sky boxes available, when we come over end of Aug you will have to let us know if it is all working and what channels you get. Problem is where can I fit a 2mt dish in our apartment will it be to big to go on the roof?
Guess you wont be at Turkish classes in September, good luck with the move.

Is there any problem with bringing a Sky box into Turkey. I mean from a Turkish point of view. I heard a rumuor that you would be charged at Dalaman if caught trying to bring one into the country.
