Which currency please?
« on: July 25, 2013, 12:35:50 PM »
Afternoon all   :)  we are off to Calis Beach in a week or so, I'm not too sure which currency is best to take!

My daughter's friend recently visited Turkey and she said that she mostly used GBP?! Said something about the locals waiting to exchange them for Lira later in the year?

So I'm confused  ???  £'s, lira or even euro's ??  Any advice please!

Thanks, Sam   :)

Buy what you can in Lira.
Restaurants & shops will take £'s but they will usually have a lower exchange rate if they convert to pounds for you.
Pounds are sometimes better in the market though.
I pay for most things in Lira.

Pay for everything in Lira, you gain by the exchange rate then.  That includes the markets.

Remember to change your money there, the exchange rate is better

for taking money then just take enough Lira to last you for the first day, especially if arriving late at night. Then change sterling in either Calis or Fethiye

Also, if you are in Fethiye try to change your pounds to lira in a bank or official change shop - NEVER change money with anyone who approaches you - even if they have a shop or business. Stick to that and you won't go far wrong!

Strange, or am I missing something. I've been visiting Turkey since 2000 and never brought any money into the country. Whenever I need cash I go to the cashmachine to get some Lira, starting with the one right outside Dalaman Disco. I've never changed money.

The currency is Turkey is the Turkish Lira.  So use the currency of the country.  Of course,  businesses will like Sterling, because they can then govern the exchange rate they give you.
We have found the Banks in Fethiye give the best exchange rate.  In Calis there are no Banks, there is an Official Change Office, however, Zumrut Jewellery will give you a better rate than the Exchange Office.
Getting Lira from the cash machine using a British Debit Card may incur charges, so check with your Bank if they do charge.  We have a Nationwide Card, they do not charge to draw Sterling, they do charge to draw Lira.  Also the ATM's at the top of the Main Street by the Dolphin Roundabout are not recommended, there have been far to many theft incidents there.  If you use a card, use it at the Banks in Fethiye, they have armed guards.

If you need money for the first few hours then Dalaman Airport has ATMs in the Arrivals Hall just before you leave into the open air. As ever, don't change cash the airport.
