Title: Barbella
Post by: Luna on August 15, 2012, 21:31:46 PM
Just returned from Calis beach, havent been there for four years, still a lovely place to go.  This time we took our 15 year old son and his friend.... THEY found Barbella restaurant whilst looking for somewhere that would give them a good full english breakfast.  Fantastic food, fantastic chilled atmosphere and they (when we were not around) made sure the teenagers were ok without us.  Just sorry we were not on hols longer to try more of their food.  The mushroom fettucine I had was the BEST EVER.... Thanks Barbella xxx

We went there one night as my son wanted to play on the play station took just under two hours to get our meal and people where  getting up and leaving as they got fed up with the wait, the food when it arrived was one of the worst meals i had in the 3 weeks there, and i will not be going back   again, i recon Barbella is  not going to survive as i see the same thing happen in there when we ate next door in the meeting point a few nights later !!!!

That really surprises me Danky as we ate there in June/July and it really was one of our favourite meals - wonder if there has been a change of chef/staff?

Yes I admit the food did take a while to turn up, but it was lovely when it did.

Consistency is a big problem here with the restaurants. The Meeting point will never change their chef as he is Ahmeds brother and Cassa De Mammas is also consistently good. We have seen so many come and go. I hope this isnt another one.

we went in June, the restaurant was fairly busy and we had to wait about 1hr 30mins to 2 hours for our meal and was not really impressed.

Been to barbella since it 1st opened in 2010 and knew the owner since the year before as his family owns a jewellers and they had lost their dog. We have watched football there and I considered it to be a good place with good staff

HOWEVER we went in there today to eat and we ordered we told them we had to go in an hour and a half so we could see the singer in Joseph's so we waited 40 mins before we got the garlic bread and made them aware that we had to leave in 30 mins a couple of times. So it was 15 mins before we had to be at Joseph's so we went to the kitchen were the owner seems to have set up a bed and renamed it his bedroom and whilst we where there we noticed our order of a magherita pizza 2 steaks and chicken just being prepped this is an order which should take no more than an hour tops and the fact that they forgot us is just unforgivable for a restaurant or a cafe. It claims to offer great customer service but waiting footer an hour for food is dreadful.

They claim to be the best but don't be fooled they are an alright restaurant at best but I have heard many people complain about them but chose not to listen however I can confirm that it was a dreadful experience and I can not nor will I forgive them as it was a farce avoid this restaurant

What a shame you have been going there since 2010 and only joined here when you had something bad to say about them.

Because it was an absolute shambles and they was just saying it was normal but I haven't ever had that before from any other restaurant bar cafe ever before so maybe I'm just lucky or that they were crap we went meeting point afterwards and it took 30 mins for the same thing so read into it what you want worst treatment we have received since we started coming here 10 years ago just absolutely ridiculous and would you believe it this was the day I read the front of their menu where they practically claim to care what their customers want and are polite and friendly.

They were playing us for fools and I just needed to vent my anger about them to people who should know what they are like I have looked on this forum loads of times but I had to join just to warn people coz it has Ruined our last night especially after we had a conversation with them that we had to be out of there early

Why would you eat the same 2 meals in different restaurants on the same night Uprockingdude??

Can't comment on uprockingrudes post as I wasn't there!

but

Emre & staff looked after a group for my birthday celebrations last Wed night without fault. Great steak, ice cold beer, complimentary cake & fireworks, even ensured there was a slice of gluten free brownie for 1 guest with a gluten intolerance.

Speak as I find, Barbellas is 1 of my favourite restaurants in Calis with consistently good food & service.

Sorry I haven't proof read that I'm on an iPhone and we all know the fabled autocorrect don't we we ordered there and after a hour and a half we went to complain and they was just rolling the dough of the pizza so we said it wasn't acceptable which I don't think is an unreasonable thing to say and left although they made us pay the bar bill which they should of waived as it was abysmal

Then we went to meeting point as I have known the owner since before he owned it told him and he sorted us out very quickly tbh I'm just very angry and disappointed with them in general as we have been going there since they opened and this year it has been no where near as good as it was last year the whole thing was just shameful!!! I have heard a lot of people saying the same as me but obviously this is a review of my time there and think that people should know about it

You are perfectly entitled to do that. We have had terrible experiences at 2 of the top so called restaurants in Calis when everyone else says they had a lovely meal and had great service. I wont be going to either again. It doesnt matter how good anyone else says it was and some of them are friends of our. !!

I have never had bad service from either The meeting point. Gunislik. Dawn Beach or The brothers bar or Josephs down that strip but others may have done. Meeting Point and Gunislik every time for us.

all I say is be careful with the set menus in gunisik they swindled us out of 20 lira we told the owner that it was wrong and still made us pay 10 lira too much

The bars down there that are great are brothers although it can be a bit slow Joseph's pies an pastries meeting point is the best place by a mile down there never been ripped off there and always treated well. Maria's is reasonable as well. I would never go to ali's food was plastic tasting I'm only in my 20s and I thought the music was too loud and corba which is on that strip after the traffic lights is nice as well and serve like 5 in the morning good of you get there early morning

I know this is about Barbella's but I am interested also to know U/R/Dude how the Guniisik can "swindle" you out of any amount of tl if the meal you had was a set price at for example 20tl, there prices are clearly marked up on the boards, I would have just paid what I knew I owed simples!!  :)

I have been going to Gunilsik and so have many of our friends and they have a huge number of local ex pats and Turks go there. I have never had to question a bill and I am sure that word would have got around by now if they were ripping people off. They are lovely honest hard working people and the best chips in Calis!!

I know this thread isn't about Gunislik but as it has been mentioned, I would just like to say we probably wouldn't eat there again.  We ordered 2 chicken wraps, chips and salad, clearly asking for 1 plain wrap due to egg allergy.  Quoted yamurta allergen as we always do in other places and got a yes, fine and a nod of the head, assuming we had been understood.  Both wraps turned up with mayo/sauce.  We explained politely that we asked for 1 plain, the reason why and could it be changed.  You would have thought the mistake was ours, the plate was snatched away quite abruptly and a lot of loud angry Turkish arm waving between 2 of them.  We waited for the replacement which was brought over and literally chucked on the table, no apology, not even any other communication for the rest of the time we were there.  Needless to say we ate up and left.  I understand mistakes happen but wasn't impressed with the way it was dealt with.

There is only one Turkish man waiting on in there called senay. There is also a woman very slim. I am amazed if this was them. More than amazed in fact. I have known them for years and he never gets flustered normally. We eat there on a regular basis and take all our holiday maker friends and they all love the food. Maybe it was a language thing. Sometimes they say they understand when they dont. However there is no need to throw your food at you.

We went to Barbella's a lot but I've found it can be a bit hit or miss, sometimes you don't get what you asked for or it's very slow in arriving, other times it's spot on.

Emre is lovely, friendly and welcoming and he does try very hard to get it right but when they get a few customers they don't seem to cope very well.

My advice would be to go when it's quiet  :)

I repeat it is disappointing to only feel the need to contribute to the forum to slate someone/something which is the case here. Followed up by an unsubstantiated claim of being ripped off in a second restaurant. I don't take much onboard from either tale - I prefer the opinions I form myself and those of people who didn't turn up five minutes ago.

I have never been to Barbella by the way.

I agree the food is great here but Emre wants to learn not to back out on a bet, Man united v gal, we won 1 - 0 pay up your 20 lira  :)

Had dinner at Barbellas last night. Wasn't over-busy but several tables eating.  We had a really good meal and served quickly.  One of our best to be fair.  Maybe the message got through?

I had a lovely Steak Diane in Barbellas in June. The service was excellent. Meal was lovely and the service was just right. I never like to rush things as I'm on holiday. Will definately go again!

Constructive criticism can work in the favour of restaurant owners who choose to act in a positive way, i will always make my own mind up and never jump on the band wagon of one or two individuals, but might have a second thought if the majority of people air there views which are either very positive or very negative , lets face it we don't all like Marmite and i could never convince somebody that has tried it and hated it,that is nice, but if you have not tried it and  you say it not nice because your friends, Nans, uncles, cousin,  told you its not nice, then your opinion will count for nothing, there are lots of people on this forum i respect and i value there opinions and there are some people that just go out of there way,and join to discredit someones business you are the only one who can decide who you believe and what action you take, just don't be fooled by every thing you read  ,!!!!

Not impressed in the slightest !!!

Had passed bye on a number of ocassions despite being forcibly shown the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.

Relented one night and went in. Wish I hadn't.

Service was appalling - with all of the staff running around like headless chickens.

Had to ask someone after five minutes if they would like to take our drinks order; came to take our food order fully 15 minutes after we arrived; a further 20 minutes passed before the toast and dips arrived and it was a further 25 minutes before our meal came. During the long wait we were repeatly asked if we won't more drinks - I had thought that Calis had got rid of that old trick.

The "patter" is also of a very poor standard with yer man saying he recognised me but not Brenda. Adding that whilst he could remember a man's face, he could not remember a woman's face, only the jewellery she wore. Oh dear. :-[.

Oh dear it doesnt sound good at all H- I've never been so cant comment. However do you think the jewellry reference is due to his mum having Bellissimo and him working in the trade for years - rather than anything personal about Brenda. Just saying!

I didn't take it as a personal slight against Brenda, Cavfan.

I just thought it was a fairly stupid thing to say and I would have much preferred that he concentrated in bringing our food in a reasonable time especially since he has a Certificate of Excellence  ;).

It was clear to me that the majority of people sitting down at the same time as us were equally unhappy wioth precedings.

I went to Barbella while I was over in June, after reading trip advisor reviews.   I had a nice lunch there, so decided to give it a try in the evening.

Like H, I found the service to be poor.  It wasn't that busy but they seemed to be struggling.  I was told that my bread and dips was on  it's way but it never arrived.  When my meal eventually arrived, the food was OK, nothing special, so I won't be bothering again.
