Or you could try flying up to Chiang Mai - it costs about £40 one way and is well worth 4 days of your time. Lots to do and see in that area and much more of the 'real Thailand'

just watch out that you don't wear red or yellow shirt if you are visiting soon, lot of unrest due to ex MP being taken to court, could result in army stepping in

Last time there was 'unrest' my sone was in BKK. He said the protesters were mostly poor people drafted in from the sticks and paid for their time. It was only down one particular road as well - mostly for the TV cameras.

Be careful though - you don't want to be in the wrong place if there is a riot.

I notice Stoop did not suggest a couple of evenings in BBK's 'PatPong' - could be worth a visit if you wish to see the 'night life' !!

indeed, they even have entertainment menus. rose garden worth a visit, the floating market very touristy. and watch the trips as every guide has an uncle with furniture, cashew nut, carpet shop which just happens to be enroute. mind you we purchased solid rosewood dinning table and eight inlaid chairs and got the lot shipped back no problem.Nows the time to fill your suitcase with very good ripp off england or who ever you fancy teams football shirt make a few bob selling them on, the fakes in PatPong are very good me I preffer F1 shirts. have a great time.

"and watch the trips as every guide has an uncle with furniture, cashew nut, carpet shop which just happens to be enroute"

SOUNDS LIKE TURKEY!!!

I know this is true - we never used a guide as we had our son with us. If you book your boat though the guy will tell the driver where you want to go. We've not been taken 'off piste' yet but there's always a first time  :)
