One thing that became very evident during the last election was that above any policy or belief, the number one priority is to be in power. This was seen with Gordon Brown's reluctance to leave and the Nice but dim brother's eagerness to get in. This isn't a criticism, it makes it clear to see that the first aim of any politician is to make sure his party is in government. You have to remember that given a choice between being in opposition, or dumping a few policies for a chance to help govern the country, any party will not be choosing to stand by principle and let the enemy into number 10.

Agree totally but I also would like to think that Vince is being quite clever by his recent announcement -  "Liberal king in waiting" springs to mind???

I also think he is as decent a senior politician as we are likely to get!

Ian,  I can agree with your comments, but he is as decent as we are likely to, where does that put the others!  I believe that politicians have to be held to account, to the point that individual MPs should be automatically dismissed as an MP if they do not strictly adhere to what they stated in their pre election speeches/publications etc.  i.e. The labour party stated no tax rises and then added the 50% rate (no I am not in this bracket - wish I was), the labour MPs who voted for it would be removed and their seats up for a by election.

This system isn't new - been the study of several alternative, but is avoided by the big boys as they know they will be out on their backsides too quickly - I call it democracy in action.

This is not party political rant as it would apply to ALL parties. (Maybe a rant though!).

Sandrats - sadly I think most of us now regard politicians these days as "worse than estate agents" (with some obvious exclusions)

As Keith said the "thirst for power" seems to corrupt and as much as I admired Margaret - it all seemed to go wrong in the 80's...

Or is that just me being naive and getter older at that time??

Well actually the point I was making was that any thirst for power is actually weaker than the pull to keep your enemy out of power.

I suppose if that gives you your only possible chance of power then it is impossible to resist, whatever you have to embrace.
