Giving Credit Card Details
« on: May 27, 2011, 17:19:00 PM »
This might be obvious but I thought I'd ask as it seems very strange. We are paying for the girl's school photos and you have to fill in one of those envelopes with an order form on, and the girls take it into school.

On the order form you have to fill in all your details including credit card number, expiry date and the 3 number code on the back of the card. Bearing in mind this is on the outside of the envelope and being taken by children and handed to an adult (who we have no idea who that might be), this seems like a ludicrous thing to be asked to do?

Surely I'm not the first person to think it's a security disaster waiting to hit my bank account, so why does the photography company act so irresponsibly - they must have been asking for payment this way for years.

Or am I over cautious about this?

I would have thought writing all that down and having your children walking around with it might be classed as irresponsible by your credit card company - there are just too many opportunities for it to fall into the wrong hands.

However, so called "Card holder not present" transactions are not as secure for the people receiving the payment - they are more easily reversed than those where you enter your pin.

So - I suspect if your info was misappropriated you have a good chance of getting refunds - but if you let them know how it got out they would be less sympathetic.

We have to keep all those details in our safe at work (for customer not present recurrent sales) and must not keep the security number with them - otherwise the card company will not cover us if the client's details are used illegally.

It's not something I would be happy doing Keith.

Definitely not putting the security code on.  Why can't they phone you when processing the order?

Madness on behalf of the photography company.

Didn't have credit cards when I paid for my kids school photos and yes they were black and white:(

I would not put my card details on the outside of an envelope. Having been ripped off twice by cloning from use of my card on t'internet I am a bit paranoid about shredding such info now.

Without wishing to be pedantic: simply put the order envelope inside a bigger one seems a sensible solution to a distinctly stupid request!
