Trains - Credit Where it is Due
« on: November 28, 2012, 23:35:23 PM »
I decided the kids (and wifey) might like a look round the Christmas markets in Edinburgh - something they are yet to experience really.

It's a train journey of over an hour - price for a day return including booking fee = £33.60 return for the four of us.

I wasn't expecting that  :)

That's good.
A return for me to Liverpool (A 30 minute journey of about 12 miles) is about £7 return.  :(

And as if that wasn't bad enough, when you get off the train, you're in Liverpool!

It's a mixed message down here. A return to Gatwick (1.5hrs) for 4 adults and 3 kids is £50. But a return to London (1hr) for 1 adult is £74!!!!!!

Scunner, you are lucky to have trains.  Our nearest Station is 25 miles away in Aberdeen.  Dr Beeching saw to that.   However, on a happier point, you and your family will love the markets, we try and visit every year and it really gets us in the Christmas mood. Takes some wet wipes as all the sticky pancakes and food you will be eating when you go around really makes all your fingers stick together.   I am sure your girls will also love the Fun Fair next to the Market and your wife will like the local craft fair they have.   Be warned you may have got cheap train fares but are liable to spend a fortune once you get there.

Sheffield last week - £8.50 from York if I booked the day before travel but as I couldn't be sure I needed the trip I paid £17 on the day. Gutted!

Still not bad compared to petrol and wear and tear I guess. Plus I only need the one way trip as I was picking a car up    :)

I find public transport in Scotland to be very good and nowhere near is expensive as in England. Still, I guess it's us Sassenachs that are paying for it anyway.

Do you have to specify which train when you book tickets on line. I'll be buying my ticket from Gatwick in advance as I know it is cheaper than buying when there but already there have been two changes to my outgoing flight time so want to wait until nearer the date.
