Yes maybe, but I think they caught on early that this guy had a grasp (albeit an off the wall one) of the legal situation and were cautious in their approach due to that.

I think they would have found it difficult to drag him through the small gap that he opened in the van window to allow the policeman to hear what he was saying but I do so wish that they would have tried.
