There was a lovely triibute to him on Scottish televison this evening which we watched from our place in Calis. So glad we did not miss it.  He was a man that people of every political persuasion liked and this programme really show just what a lovely person he was.  So very sad, he was only 55 years old and leaves a 10 year old son.

Is it possible that the news of Charles' death has become more shocking as the day has gone on.

Such a lovely, unassuming gentleman and such a terrible loss.

Sincere condolences to his family.

So the resignation of a corrupt football administrator is more important than the death of a leading Uk politician

I share your disgust H but I have been surprised by some seemingly genuine

tributes from some unexpected quarters. Alastair Campbell gave a touching

interview about his longtime close friendship with Charles and was obviously

upset. It's clear he was widely respected.

Kevin3 - I believe that Alistair Campbell's tribute along with the many others was totally genuine.

We have lost a very good man.

The Nationalist newspaper's headline today read "He died without an enemy in the world"

A fine epitaph for anyone but surely a remarkable one for a politician.

Lots of folk up here still in shock and deeply saddened. :(

Understand that H.  He was the sort of politician you would have voted for whatever his political  persuasion as you would have wanted him as your M.P. As you would have known he would have worked hard for you and you could depend on him.   ;)

On accepting the lose of his seat he said.....

"The greatest privilege of my public life over these past 32 years has to be being entrusted with the responsibility of representing this constituency.

'That is thanks to a generation and more of voters who have extended that trust to me and I hope, looking back over those 32 years, they will feel that it was trust well placed.'

For me it most certainly was.

I can't think of many politicians/MPs who held their own and seemed to have the respect of the HIGNFY regulars - it is a great loss for politics at a time when the very thing they needed was more Charles Kennedys.

Any news on how he died? Not that it matters much, I just hope he didn't do anything silly, perhaps thinking that the very people he gave 32 years of strong and loyal service to had rejected his work and effort.

Which they did.
